Position Overview
The UBSC Publications Editorial Assistant will serve as the team lead/editor of the Eagles’ Nest section of the North Texan magazine, the university’s magazine that distributes to 220,000 alumni and university friends in the fall and spring. The individual selected would work with UBSC editors to learn the editing workflow, budget content for the magazine (digital and print), and flow and edit copy in Adobe InCopy.
The individual would be responsible for:
- Serving as a section editor and team lead to plan and coordinate the Eagles’ Nest section of the North Texan, which would include
collaborating with other publications editors to create strategic content that aligns and embeds messaging in content to help build the university’s image and reputation. - Researching, conceiving, writing and formatting copy for university publications, taking pains to ensure consistency in style, tone, quality and accuracy.
- Following all UBSC editorial processes.
- Coordinating with creative and web designers, photographers and videographers and other UBSC team members in the creation of written/visual/video/graphic content to best promote UNT.
- Editing and proofing content for official university channels to ensure that all copy is relevant, accurate and follows university policy and legal guidelines.
- Writing, editing and compiling the Class Notes and Friends’ We’ll Miss (obituaries).
- Writing magazine features, pullouts and other content for the rest of the magazine, as assigned.
- Collaborating with Managing Editor to assign the various pullouts and mini alum profiles that are incorporated in the section
- Managing the InCopy process for the section to flow in the live copy into the section and to review and make edits from other editors until the section receives sign off.
- Coordinating and managing the online copy for the section, which would include posting the content to the site as it is completed (or coordinating with whoever is assigned to post content).
- Serving as a first editor on magazine copy, as assigned.
- Writing social media content for @NorthTexan to tease the content in Eagles’ Nest, as needed and assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
Must have a Bachelor's degree.
Must have 1-2 years experience working with publications, writing, editing, formatting copy writing.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Knowledge on how to use InCopy, Adobe Creative Cloud and AP Stylebook.
- Ability to research, conceive and write formatting copy for university publications.
