The New Jersey Attorney General’s office is looking for an experienced appellate practitioner to join the Appellate Practice Group as an Assistant Attorney General for the Division of Law in Trenton, NJ. The position will be appointed as an Assistant Attorney General with a salary of $178,250.00 per year. Salary is non-negotiable.
ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT:
The Attorney General has broad oversight of the state’s legal and law enforcement matters. As the head of the Department of Law & Public Safety, the Attorney General supervises a wide range of Divisions, Offices, and Commissions, consisting of over 2,800 sworn law enforcement officers, 600 attorneys, and thousands of other public servants.
ABOUT THE DIVISION:
The Division of Law (DOL) serves as primary legal counsel for New Jersey state government. Generally speaking, this work takes three forms: by providing legal advice to the state’s departments and agencies, by defending the state in civil litigation, and by bringing civil lawsuits against individuals, corporations, and other entities that violate the law and harm New Jersey and its residents. Staffed by nearly 500 attorneys, DOL’s responsibilities cover a broad swath of legal issues, including those involving banking, child protection, corrections, education, environmental, finance, health, insurance, taxation, and transportation matters.
ABOUT THE PRACTICE GROUP:
The Appellate Practice Group has overall management and supervisory responsibility and provides policy direction for the handling of state and federal court appeals throughout the Division.
ABOUT THE POSITION:
Under the supervision of the Assistant Attorney General in charge of the Appellate Practice Group and/or the Director or Deputy Director of the Division of Law, will:
- Assist in the oversight and management of the Appellate Practice Group, including supervising, evaluating, strategizing, analyzing and reviewing all aspects of an appeal from inception through motion practice, briefing and oral argument;
- Serve as resources to Deputy Attorneys General assigned to represent the clients involved in appeals across all the Division’s Practice Groups;
- Handle complex appellate matters for briefing and argument; provide training on appellate practice, writing skills and oral argument presentation;
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Graduation from an accredited law school with a Juris Doctor.
- Admission to practice as an Attorney-at-Law in the State of New Jersey is required.
- Four (4) years of professional legal experience as an attorney at law of the State of New Jersey in the area of the specialty
- or, three (3) years of professional legal experience as an attorney for State or Federal administrative agencies, which shall have involved a significant amount of the specialized legal work,
- or, two (2) years of unique specialized legal experience.
OTHER KEY FACTORS:
- Appointees will be required to possess a driver's license valid in New Jersey.
- Candidates should submit a supplemental document, included with your resume, outlining (a) appellate experience in State and Federal courts; and (b) supervisory experience over other attorneys.
