Reporting directly to the Chair of Medicine, the Division Director of Renal Medicine in the Department of Medicine, Emory University School of Medicine will provide senior leadership in all clinical, educational and research endeavors within the Renal Medicine Division. The Division Director has direct responsibility for building and continued development of renal medicine programs to include clinical care, basic science and clinical/translational research and education.
As a nationally recognized leader in the field of renal medicine, this visionary Division Director will lead the research efforts of the Division to enhance Emory’s reputation as a leading biomedical research institution. Specific areas of interest with respect to research include basic, clinical, and health services research in ion/water/urea transport, mechanisms of cell growth and atrophy, signal transduction, hypertension, vascular calcification, and disease disparities and outcomes. The Director will also provide leadership support for education programs within the Division, including those for graduate students, medical students, and clinical and research fellows, to ensure the competitiveness of these programs with respect to development of an innovative curriculum, assessment and evaluation methodology, development and oversight of the clinical competence component, communication and documentation to ACGME, and program administration and management.
The Division Director will also work closely with Emory Healthcare and affiliate leadership (e.g., Grady Health System, Veterans Administration Health System) to ensure high quality nephrology care to all patients, to coordinate nephrology services across medical facilities, and to exercise appropriate operational deployment of nephrology physicians and financial management of services. This individual will be a key partner with the leaders and faculty of the Emory Dialysis Center and Emory Transplant Center and will work with the Chair of Medicine to develop clinical programs involving nephrology and to plan new programs and services. They are expected to advance programs, including interdisciplinary efforts, that enhance the academic reputation of the Division and improve quality of care, and to play a visible role in planning the strategic direction of the Division for the Department, School of Medicine and Woodruff Health Sciences Center.
In addition, the Division Director will be responsible for overall management of the division (45 faculty, 33 staff) and recruitment, mentorship, retention and management of diverse faculty, trainees, and staff. They will ensure that the Division is fiscally responsible and compliant with all pertinent regulatory and administrative requirements. The Division Director will serve as a member of the senior leadership team of the Department of Medicine and will work closely with other Division Directors to realize the goals of the Department. The Director is expected to embody the values and mission of the Department, the School of Medicine and Emory University to create an optimal climate for excellence in clinical care, research and teaching. The Director will be a key champion for advancing diversity, equity and inclusion in the culture of the Division.

Major Job Responsibilities
The Division Director of Renal Medicine works closely with Department of Medicine, School of Medicine, Emory Healthcare and affiliate leadership (e.g., Grady Health System, Veterans Administration Health System) to lead, manage and promote the division’s patient care, teaching and research. This position includes responsibility for overall management of the division, faculty development, physician practice operations, education of nephrology fellows, medical students, graduate students, and research program growth and development. This individual is a key champion and supporter of diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives and practices within the institution and the division. The successful candidate will establish programs that enhance the academic reputation of the division and improve quality of care, and will play a visible role in planning the strategic direction of the division for the DOM.

Qualifications
Qualified candidates must hold an MD or MD/PhD degree, be a board-certified physician and a nationally recognized renal researcher and clinician. Progressive administrative experience, preferably in an academic medical center setting, is preferred. Candidates should have a solid track record of sponsored research as a scientist and principal investigator with externally funded renal medicine research awards. We are looking for an accomplished operational and strategic leader with direct administrative experience that includes a broad understanding of complex health strategies and issues challenging the field of nephrology and its medical education programs.

Division of Renal Medicine
The Division of Renal Medicine within Emory University’s DOM serves as a regional and national academic and clinical unit to meet the tripartite mission: research, teaching, patient care. As one of the largest renal divisions in the country, the Division has 45 diverse faculty members at various major teaching and patient care facilities associated with Emory University, including the Emory Clinic, Emory University Hospital, Atlanta Veterans’ Affairs Medical Center and Grady Memorial Hospital and Clinics. Within Emory Healthcare, division faculty are active as physicians in the Emory Dialysis Center and Emory Transplant Center and support a large and diverse patient population. The Division offers a Nephrology Fellowship training program that includes 12 fellows and provides comprehensive training in clinical nephrology and research and boasts multiple training grants. In addition to numerous clinical trials ongoing in our patient-care facilities, the Emory Division of Renal Medicine has full-time basic science investigators whose work is supported by the National Institutes of Health, US Department of Veterans’ Affairs, and other major funding agencies. The research faculty, some of whom are physician-scientists, have specialized interests in ion/water/urea transport, mechanisms of cell growth and atrophy, signal transduction, hypertension, vascular calcification, and disease disparities and outcomes.
