Position Overview
The Director, Software Engineering will provide accountability, leadership, team building, and execution necessary to guide a division of the overall Software Engineering team through multiple concurrent software initiatives. This position will interact with other leaders in the company and is directly responsible for ensuring software projects are undertaken with confidence and minimal oversight. The Director, Software Engineering will work with several cross-functional teams to create and execute unified Software Engineering strategy, standards, and technologies that are leveraged across the Engineering and Business Partner organizations. This individual will ensure the continued growth of a successful Software Engineering team which supports mission-critical development at Exact Sciences in a wide range of business areas.
Essential Duties
- Provide independent confident leadership to the software engineering team.
- Combine knowledge of business priorities and needs with the capabilities of the team and supporting peer functions to execute on project initiatives with minimal guidance.
- Bring formalized architectural modeling practices to the team, looking at the big picture but producing detailed architectural deliverables; including, but not limited to, functional decomposition, component, and deployment diagrams.
- Raise capabilities in the engineering team; including, but not limited to, developing coding, testing, and deployment protocols and best practices.
- Maintain relationships and transparency with key stakeholders (CEO, COO, Sales, Support, Customers, and Affiliates).
- Execute project delivery to client satisfaction on time, on budget with quality.
- Develop and grow Software Engineering capabilities for the company as we expand product lines and systems integrations to encompass centralized IT systems that drive efficiencies across a combined, multi-site organization.
- Leverage technical expertise and industry trends to influence business, product strategy, development, and Quality Engineering best practices.
- Define and implement engineering standards; including, but not limited to, architecture and design principles, database and security standards, documentation standards, coding standards, code-review methodology, and unit-testing methodologies.
- Ability to lead software development, including knowledge of programming languages, software architecture, and development methodologies like Agile and Scrum.
- Partner with business and technology teams to prioritize roadmaps and requirements, balancing business need with capacity and technology constraints.
- Influence senior engineering and business leaders to drive increased capability through engineering processes and technologies.
- Effectively manage, support, and guide your team, including, but not limited to, delegating tasks and responsibilities, assessing employee performance and providing helpful feedback and training opportunities.

- Ability to lift up to 10 pounds for approximately 5% of a typical working day.
- Ability to work on a mobile device, tablet, or in front of a computer screen and/or perform typing for approximately 90% of a typical working day.
- Ability and means to travel between all Exact Sciences laboratory locations.
- Ability to travel up to 25% of working time away from work location, may include overnight/weekend travel.
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or a field related to the essential duties of the job; or High School Degree/General Education Diploma and 4 years of relevant experience in lieu of Bachelor's degree.
- 10+ years of experience in Information Technology with progressing level of responsibility and technical skillset.
- 5+ years of experience leading or directing people and/or project teams.
- Experience in developing large-scale, high-volume services, distributed systems, and microservices-based architectures.
- Proficient in core technologies such as Java, JavaScript frameworks like Angular or React, SQL and NoSQL databases, Terraform, messaging brokers like Kafka, and caching technologies.
- Demonstrated ability to perform the essential duties of the position with or without accommodation.
- Authorization to work in the United States without sponsorship.
Preferred Qualifications
- 8+ years of relevant technical and leadership experience.
- Experience in any of the following areas: ERP, LIMS, Bioinformatics, or clinical data management.
- Experience working in a regulated environment (SOX, HIPAA, CLIA, GCP, FDA, ISO-13485, and/or IEC-62304).
- Demonstrated understanding of the Clinical Lab environment.
- Proficiency in design, implementation, and maintenance of database systems (e.g., PostgreSQL, MySQL, and NoSQL).
- Enterprise class information technology experience (Custom-COTS Hybrid, Integrated Multi-Channel End-User, Multiple Mobile Platform Delivery, Distributed Big Data).
Salary Range:
$174,000.00 - $277,000.00 The annual base salary shown is for this position located in US - WI - Madison on a full-time basis and may differ by hiring location. In addition, this position is bonus eligible, and is eligible to receive company stock upon hire as well as annually.
