JOB SUMMARY
Under the general direction of the Executive Director of Nursing, the Director of Surgical Services provides leadership, direction, and oversight of the operating rooms and assigned procedural areas in accordance with JCAHO, federal, state, and local guidelines, organizational, and departmental policies and procedures. Communicates with medical staff, other departments, and outside agencies while maintaining confidentiality. Lead to continuous quality and process improvement initiatives and ensure a balanced scorecard in clinical areas, including quality of care and service, staff and physician satisfaction, and financial performance and growth.
STANDARDS OF PERFORMANCE
- Prepares and manages departmental budgets. Recommends the types and numbers of resources required. Allocates resources based on departmental and organizational goals and objectives. Develops a Master Staffing Plan for all areas and participates in recruiting.
- Review financial and operational data to evaluate quality of service, workload, revenue, and expenses. Takes corrective action as appropriate.
- Develops plans and feasibility analyses for expansion or change in services. Prepares facility plans and recommendations. Participates in meetings with architects and engineers to plan and implement facility changes.
- Directs quality control performance management and improvement activities within the departments—present information and action items to the Performance Improvement Committee as assigned.
- Provides direction for delivering cost-effective, quality patient care based on established regulatory, professional, and organizational standards within the context of the operating vision. Remains competent in the delivery of patient care.
- Responsible for the department's operational excellence by ensuring the delivery of quality services in accordance with applicable policies, procedures, and professional standards.
- Knowledgeable about current practices and standards in operating room techniques and nursing practice. Utilizes knowledge to lead performance improvement activities. Leads efforts to improve operations and outcomes in surgical services.
- Organizes surgical services by selecting and developing a leadership team, creating an orderly organizational design, and monitoring outcomes.
- Develops and builds strategic internal and external networks.
- Strives to become the OR of Choice for physicians, patients, staff, and payers in the community they serve.
- Accurately identifies actual/potential problems affecting the service and implements solutions through follow-through and communication.
- Actively participates in service, departmental, and hospital-wide committees as assigned, providing ongoing communication to those one represents.
- Advances the customer experience in Surgical Services.
- Coaches’ subordinates provide feedback and constructive critique of work, facilitate individual development plans, and document their job performance.
- Adheres to all Human Resource policies.
- Effectively communicates departmental, organizational, and industry information to staff.
- Facilitates evidence-based employee engagement practices.
- Effectively builds strong relationships and networks to deliver upon organizational and department goals.
- Participate in employee and patient rounding, Identifies and mentor potential future leaders.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
JOB REQUIREMENTS
Minimum Level of Education: Bachelor’s degree in nursing from an accredited program. Master's degree in Nursing preferred.
Formal Training: Must have significant years of effective management experience in a Surgical Services setting. Other combinations of formal education, training, and experience may be considered. Must possess excellent communication, interpersonal, managerial, and computer skills.
Licensure, Certification, Registration: Must have and maintain an unencumbered Registered Nurse License in the State of Georgia and have and maintain BLS, ACLS CPR certifications. Certified Nurse Operating Room (CNOR) certification preferred
Work Experience: Minimum of five years of progressive perioperative services experience or perioperative nursing management experience with increasing level of administrative responsibility and authority.
