Essential Responsibilities
- Oversee a team of property accountants (currently six professionals), who are each responsible for 50-60 self storage properties
- Train, develop and grow team to meet the needs of the business, including evaluation of roles/responsibilities, repositioning of staff, setting performance goals and providing regular feedback
- Coordinate monthly close activities, including accruals, reconciliations and preparation of management financial statements
- Monitor daily cash balances and cash forecasts to ensure liquidity needs are met
- Assist with treasury operations, including cash positioning, wire transfers, and bank account administration
- Liaise with Accounts Payable, Investor Reporting, Asset Management, Operations and other internal teams to develop best practices and provide support
- Manage banking relationships, negotiate banking services and fees and support local banking needs for individual storage properties
- Collaborate with internal teams to ensure compliance with financial policies and procedures
- Assist in the coordination of audits and provide necessary documentation to auditors
- Contribute to process improvement initiatives to enhance the accuracy and efficiency of financial operations, leveraging technology to drive automation and reduce manual processes
- Stay informed about changes in accounting regulations and standards
- Provide financial insights and recommendations to senior management
- Perform other duties and ad-hoc projects as assigned by the EVP of Accounting and Chief Financial Officer
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Economics or related field
- 10+ years’ experience in corporate/managerial accounting
- Knowledge of accounting software and ERP systems; proficiency in Microsoft Excel
- Leadership and team management experience, with the ability to motivate and develop a team
- Excellent analytical, strategic thinking and problem-solving skills
- Customer service mindset and attitude
- Effective communication skills with the ability to present complex financial information to stakeholders
- Ability to prioritize workload, meet deadlines, and work effectively in a fast-paced environment
- Certified Public Accountant (CPA) or Certified Management Accountant (CMA) designation preferred
