The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) of Florida seeks a Director of Philanthropy. This position is located at the Miami headquarters and includes some travel.
The American Civil Liberties Union of Florida is an affiliate of the ACLU, Inc., a national public interest organization devoted to the defense of civil rights and civil liberties. For over 100 years, the ACLU has served as the nation's primary protector of the liberties that define our democracy. The organization implements its vital civil liberties mission in all 50 states in large part through affiliates such as the ACLU of Florida.
The ACLU of Florida, the state's largest civil rights and civil liberties organization with a staff of 40 people, employs litigation, public policy advocacy, communications, and public education strategies to protect and promote a broad range of constitutional values and individual rights, including freedom of speech, equality, due process, racial justice, privacy, religious liberty, criminal justice reforms, voting rights, reproductive rights, LGBTQ+ rights, disability rights, and immigrants' rights. The ACLU of Florida litigates a broad range of constitutional cases in federal and state courts through direct representation, amicus briefs, and administrative complaints to state and federal agencies.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES
FUNDRAISING RESPONSIBILITIES
- Provides strategic vision and overall leadership for the organization's program of donor engagement and support to advance the vision and priorities of ACLU projects, campaigns, and initiatives
- Manages a skilled and diverse professional development staff to ensure the efficient administration, commitment, and allocation of human and financial resources of the department towards key ACLU goals while enhancing their professional growth
- Leads the professional staff in the development of strategies and methods for establishing, cultivating, and nurturing support from individual donors and foundations
- Oversees management and tracking of donor portfolios, with cultivation of planned giving and special contribution opportunities to increase donor support
- Manages a robust program for the solicitation of grants from foundations and the fulfillment of reporting requirements
- Administers a system and implements tools to track and measure the success of fundraising projects, campaigns, and related organization fundraising efforts
- Leads and facilitates donor outreach, campaigns, and fundraising strategies.
- Collaborates with National, regional, and affiliate development colleagues to maximize financial support to the affiliate and the ACLU as a whole
LEADERSHIP AND SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Fosters a culture of collaboration and accountability that is consistent with the values and mission of the ACLU
- Mobilizes the department's resources to respond rapidly and effectively to new and emerging civil liberties issues
- Demonstrates proven leadership in a multi-disciplinary organization with statewide staff and coalition partners in diverse communities
- Reviews and evaluates work methods and procedures and meets with the Executive Director to identify and resolve problems.
- Assesses and monitors workload; identifies opportunities for improvement and implements changes.
- Selects, trains, motivates, and evaluates department personnel; provides or coordinates staff training; collaborates with staff to correct deficiencies; implements discipline procedures per established policies, procedures, and executive guidance
- Oversees and participates in the development and administration of the departmental budget; approves the forecast of funds needed for staffing, program, equipment, and materials
ORGANIZATIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES
- Develops strong working relationships and systems of communication with senior management and the Board of Directors on key organizational goals and objectives and enhances the Board's effectiveness in fulfilling its fiduciary and governance responsibilities
- Provides the Executive Director with status reports on giving activity, department initiatives toward securing support from donors, and overall progress toward established goals
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Commitment to the mission and goals of the ACLU
- Seven (7) years of leadership experience in a senior-level fundraising position in a non-profit, public advocacy or similar environment
- Knowledge of principles, tools, tactics, and strategies employed in major fundraising campaigns; CFRE preferred
- Demonstrated ability to achieve overall revenue goals based on individual donor goals
- Proven record of retention and upgrading of donors and securing donor commitments for planned giving and special campaigns
- Proven track record in soliciting, closing, and stewarding gifts over $10,000+
- Knowledge of the fundamentals and practices of seeking from foundations and grant management, including prospecting, grant writing, budgeting, and reporting
- Strong experience communicating effectively and respectfully on the phone, over Zoom, and in person with donors, board members, volunteers, staff, and the general public
- Experience leveraging database management systems to ensure complete, secure, and private donor records; experience with Salesforce is a plus.
- Demonstrated ability to simplify complex themes and myriad details into a short, compelling written and oral presentation
- Skill in the use of Microsoft Office products (Word, Outlook, and Excel), Google Suite, project management tools such as Asana, and the ability to learn and become proficient in the use of other specialized software as may be required
- Strong organizational skills, with the ability to prioritize and manage multiple projects simultaneously and meet tight deadlines
- Skill in developing, managing, and interpreting budgets, contracts, and fiscal and financial reports
- Ability to effectively present information and advice to senior management and all relevant internal and external stakeholders
- Fluency or oral and/or writing ability in a second language, especially Spanish or Kreyol, is preferred but not required.
- Must possess and maintain a valid State of Florida Driver License
- An equivalent combination of education, certification, training, and/or experience is acceptable.
