POSITION SUMMARY:
The Director of Nursing is responsible for administration of nursing service in the Windsor Gardens Care Center. He/she directs, plans, and coordinates service activities of professional nursing and auxiliary nursing personnel in rendering resident care. The Director of Nursing interprets facility policies and regulations to all nursing personnel and ensures compliance, as well as analyzes and evaluates nursing and related services rendered to improve quality of resident care and to better utilize staff time and abilities. The Director of Nursing also ensures the provision of in-service training programs for nursing personnel.
RESPONSIBILITIES/ ACCOUNTABILITIES
1 Develops and implements philosophy, objectives, policies and standards of nursing practice in accordance with the goals of the Windsor Gardens Care Center organization.
2 Monitors nursing care to assure that all residents are treated fairly, with kindness, dignity and respect;
3 Develops, maintains, and periodically updates written policies and procedures that govern the functions of the nursing department, as well as the facility’s ongoing quality assurance program for the nursing department;
4 Completes daily rounds on the units to observe residents and to determine if nursing needs are being met;
5 Reviews nursing progress notes to ensure that they are informative and descriptive of the nursing care provided and that they reflect the resident’s response to the plan of care;
6 Works with the Administrator to develop, allocate and control the budget for the Department of Nursing Services;
7 Maintains cohesive public and professional relationships, including community, resident and family and physician services;
8 Provides a formal liaison between the medical staff and the department of nursing services;
9 Provides direction to nursing staff through written policies, procedures, nursing administration meetings, routine staff meetings, and written memos;
10 Develops short and long-range plans for the nursing department that are compatible with those of the facility;
11 Serves on various committee such as Patient Care Policy, Pharmaceutical Services, Infection Control, Safety and Quality Improvement, as applicable, which meet to evaluate activities within the facility and to recommend changes in operations and follows up on committee recommendations affecting nursing services;
12 Participates in the assessment of residents to be admitted by evaluating the level and amount of care required by prospective residents in relation to existing nursing capabilities;
13 Remains on call for emergencies 24 hours a day;
14 Coordinates the revision and implementation of infection control procedures as outlined in company policies. Assures all nursing staff are trained and utilizes all facets of infection control procedures to protect staff, residents and families;
15 Makes recommendations to the Administrator regarding nursing care equipment/supplies required to meet the needs of the residents and assures that adequate supplies are available;
16 Assures that each resident’s attending physician and family or responsible party are promptly notified of any significant change in the resident’s health condition;
17 Ensures that the nursing care developed through the resident’s Care Plan is implemented and that these Care Plans are periodically reviewed and modified as necessary;
18 Coordinates nursing services with all other services and departments to ensure proper care of the resident;
19 Assures that all Physician Orders are followed as prescribed;
20 Assures that each resident’s accident or incident is fully documented and reported in accordance with the policies and procedures of the facility and the Federal/State rules and regulations;
21 Determines the staffing needs of the Nursing department necessary to meet the nursing needs of the residents;
22 Coordinates supervisory and ancillary nursing department schedules;
23 Recruits, interviews, and hires professional personnel.;
24 Reviews and evaluates the work performance of nursing staff as well as counsel/discipline personnel according to established company personnel policy;
25 Concerns his/herself with the safety of all facility residents in order to minimize the potential for fire and accidents. Also, ensures that the facility adheres to the legal, safety, health, fire and sanitation codes by being familiar with his/her role in carrying out the facility’s fire, safety and disaster plans and by being familiar with current MSDS;
26 Ensures that residents and families receive the highest quality of service in a caring and compassionate atmosphere which recognizes the individuals’ needs and rights;
27 Performs other duties as requested.
SPECIFIC EDUCATIONAL/ VOCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
1 The Director of Nursing Services must be a graduate of an accredited school of nursing, college or university with a current registered nurse licensure by the New Jersey State Board of Nursing.
2 A minimum of five years full-time or equivalent clinical experience with at least two years experience in nursing supervision in the long-term care setting is required.
3 BSN preferred.

2 Must possess the ability to work independently, problem solve and make decisions as necessary.
3 Must possess the ability to positively interact with personnel, residents, family members, visitors, government agencies/personnel and the general public.
4 Must be able to develop and implement programs, policies and procedures, etc., which are necessary to assure that the highest degree of quality of care is consistently provided to the residents.
5 Must be knowledgeable of nursing and medical practices and procedures, as well as laws, regulations and guidelines pertaining to long term care administration.
6 Must possess thorough knowledge of licensing and certification regulations.
7 Must provide annual verification of a negative TB skin test.
PERFORMS RELATED DUTIES:
1 In the absence of the Administrator and/or licensed Assistant Administrator, the D.O.N. is responsible for carrying out the administrative duties of the Windsor Gardens Care Center.
2 Interacts with residents, families, visitors and employees.
3 He/she carries out other tasks as requested in situations where hands-on intervention/participation may be required.
