Turnaround Management Association (TMA) is seeking an experienced and motivated Membership Professional to join their team in downtown Chicago. In this role, you will collaborate closely with the Chief Executive Officer and leadership team while managing a small team of two individuals. As the Director of Membership, you will oversee all aspects of day-to-day membership operations, drive membership development and retention strategies, foster relationships with chapters. The person will need to have high proficiency in the use and management of Association Management Systems (Protech or similar) for extraction of data, creation of reports for chapters and other matters that may arise requiring support of chapters and their administrators.
The ideal candidate will also have strong business acumen, excellent leadership abilities, and operational expertise. This role requires a highly organized individual with exceptional project management skills, attention to detail, and the ability to effectively manage multiple priorities. The successful candidate will possess a proven track record of driving results through collaboration, problem-solving, and maintaining a strong work ethic.

Turnaround Management Association (TMA) (not-for-profit) is the most professionally diverse organization in the corporate restructuring, renewal, and corporate health space. We are a community of professionals who work with companies to improve performance, manage disruption, restructure, and work through insolvency, preserve equity, and drive significantly improved results. Established in 1988 and located in downtown Chicago on Wacker Drive, TMA has nearly 10,000 members in 54 chapters worldwide, including 35 North American chapters. - Salary Range: $105-$115k per year depending on experience/qualifications
What is the Opportunity?
Under the leadership of the CEO, the position is responsible for TMA's overall membership operations working collaboratively with leadership and the membership team to develop and execute the organization's membership strategy. More specifically they would be responsible for the following:
- Oversee and lead the membership team by coaching and developing them, providing any performance feedback.
- Develop and implement strategies for retention of existing members and recruitment and cultivation of new members.
- Assess the dues' structure, dues rates, and membership benefits for individuals and propose changes, when necessary.
- Propose membership quantity goals to the CEO, Executive Board, and Board of Trustees and meet or exceed the approved goals.
- Work with the Director of Marketing & Communications to develop and execute long-range and annual strategies designed to achieve membership recruitment and retention goals.
- Perform strategic market analysis to determine what products or services to promote and what type of promotion will appeal to the end user.
- Develop annual budgets for the allocation of staff and financial resources that optimize the effectiveness of all membership recruitment and retention initiatives.
- Responsible for management of all membership data, tracking and reporting, overseeing the management of the membership database including report writing and data analysis.
- Oversee and execute as needed the regular print and electronic communication related to an individual's membership status, renewal, etc.
- Publish monthly and annual reports on membership status.
- Oversee the processes related to accurately process membership renewals.
- Serve as staff liaison to the Chapter Presidents Council, Chapter Resource Committee and Response Committee.
- Build and maintain effective relationships with Chapter Presidents and others in leadership at the Chapter level, through active ongoing communication to identify chapter needs and traveling to chapter meetings as necessary.
- Supports the CEO in Global initiatives related to chapters, chapter relations, membership, and governance.
- Share in the day-to-day operations of the organization as it relates to the duties of the position or as in the normal course of the running of the office as do the other staff members (i.e. special projects, conferences, logistics etc.)
- Other responsibilities as assigned or as needed.
Job Location: Flexible hybrid work arrangement with three days in the office (Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays) and other days virtual.
- Relocation assistance will not be provided for out-of-state candidates.
What qualifications are needed?
- Bachelor's degree required or equivalent experience and training; advanced degree in related field a plus.
- Minimum 8 plus years of experience managing membership programs in a member-driven organization preferred.
- Minimum three years in a leadership supervisory role.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office, Dynamics 365, SQL, and strong Excel and basic computer knowledge.
- Database experience, preferably with a leading association management software program (i.e. Protech, iMIS, Abila) required
- Experience selecting and implementing AMS software preferred.
- Strong experience in staff and budget management, with excellent team building and collaboration skills.
- Superior interpersonal, analytical, and problem-solving abilities.
- Ability to present data in a logical, concise manner.
- Manage multiple deadlines and competing priorities.
- Adapt to changing direction of projects and strategies.
- Interact well with vendors, peers, staff and volunteer leadership.
- Must maintain confidentiality and a high level of discretion.
- Willingness to travel nationally (up to four times a year) to assist with TMA's events.
