INIT Innovations in Transportation, Inc. is looking for a Director of Human Resources to join our team. INIT’s corporate North American headquarters is in Chesapeake, Virginia. The Director of Human Resources is a hands-on professional responsible for overseeing, developing, and maintaining all human resources operations within our organization, including employee compensation, benefits, performance management, career development, and recruiting. The ideal candidate will have a solid understanding of international HR practices and regulations, excellent communication and interpersonal skills, and a proven record of accomplishment in managing HR operations with an international company.
Responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:
- Take an active, day-to-day role in HR operations, including employee relations, recruitment, onboarding, performance management, and talent development. Work closely with supervisors, managers and employees to address HR needs.
- Promote a high-performance, inclusive company culture that reflects the organization’s values. Lead initiatives that identify ways to elevate staff retention and productivity, including strategies to enhance employee engagement, leadership and career development, succession planning, regular feedback, coaching, and a positive workplace environment.
- Facilitate open communications, offering guidance and consultation to employees and managers for HR topics, providing an open-door policy for all.
- Maintain employee relations, progressive discipline documentation, and facilitate investigations and grievance procedures, as necessary. Work with the legal department to resolve complex employee relations issues.
- Maintain current knowledge and application of all relevant employment laws and regulations at the local, state, federal and international level to ensure organizational compliance. Experience working with Canadian and German law is helpful.
- Maintain and update with the legal department company policies, employee handbooks, agreements and procedures related to staffing, transfers, compliance, discipline, leave policies, benefits, and pay.
- Work with HR team at parent company in Germany regarding contracts for ex-pats here in the US.
- Educate and advise senior management on HR-related legal and regulatory matters and ensure HR practices and policies are aligned. Mitigate legal risk through proactive training and education.
- Develop and drive talent management strategies for our US and Canadian new hires with our internal recruiter to ensure effective staffing alignment with the needs of INIT. Ensure INIT remains a competitive employer with our compensation and benefit programs. Provide feedback for making final offer recommendations.
- Teamwork collaboration with HR staff for employee appreciation events and holiday gifts, from the planning through completion phase.
- Hire, train, supervise, and evaluate HR staff.
Work Location: In-Office, Chesapeake, VA
Experience and Skills:
- Bachelor's degree in HR management, business administration, or related field required. Master's degree preferred.
- 7+ years of progressive HR experience, with at least 3-5 years in a leadership role focused on developing, regulating, and implementing HR policies and organizational development strategies.
- At least 2 years of international HR experience.
- Proven hands-on experience managing HR functions, from strategy to day-to-day operations.
- Strong leadership and team management skills, with the ability to build relationships and influence at all levels of the organization.
- Excellent problem-solving and conflict-resolution abilities.
- Experience with HR software and systems (e.g., HRIS), UKG™ preferred.
- Senior SHRM or HRCI certification is a plus.
- Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite products.
- In-depth knowledge of US labor and employment laws.
- Exceptional interpersonal, leadership and communication skills, both verbal and written.
- Knowledge of data analysis and reporting.
- Expertise in critical decision making, strategic thinking, and process improvement.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality of sensitive information.
- Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
- Must be able to lift up to 25 pounds at times.
