Primary Function & Position Overview:
The Director of High School Admissions fulfills their commitment to our mission by ensuring all graduating Public Prep Academies scholars are accepted to the right-fit, high-quality high schools where a high percentage of the students graduate in four years and are accepted and enroll in four-year colleges or universities. This percentage is established annually through the goal-setting process.
The Director of High School Admissions will lead College Knowledge curriculum development and implementation for middle school scholars and work closely with scholars and families across Public Prep Academies to facilitate the high school admissions process in New York City. The Director of High School Admissions will also establish partnerships with high-performing public, private, and charter schools to learn more about their application processes and connect them to Public Prep scholars. They will also cultivate partnerships with prestigious high school and college prep programs and increase admission of Public Prep scholars into those programs. The Director of High School Admissions reports to the Director of Special Projects with a dotted-line relationship to the Principals of the scholars they serve.
The Director of High School Admissions will work closely with the external relations/development team as well as the student and family support team to execute strategies that build and strengthen relationships with our alumni network, promoting engagement and fostering lifelong connections to our schools. As such, they are charged with supporting Public Prep alumni in their transition to high school and in their first two years.
Duties & Responsibilities
Managing a comprehensive high school application process that ensures optionality for 8th graders including but not limited to: NYC high school admissions process (screened, specialized, etc), parochial school admissions, and private/boarding school admissions
- Meeting with students and families, 1:1 and in group settings, to explain the high school admissions process and present timelines for researching schools, curate a personalized high school list, applying for financial aid, schedule tours, prepare for exams, drafting essays, submitting applications, and participating in interviews
- Creating materials and resources for students and families regarding the high school admissions process and sharing in multiple formats including virtually, in person, and 1 on 1
- Developing and overseeing a system to track student applications and acceptances to high school, pre-college programs, and college access and prep programs
- Working with the Principal and other stakeholders to monitor students' progress as it relates to high school admissions, including coordinating letters of recommendation as necessary and collaborating with Humanities Teachers to support the development of student essays
- Reflecting on the high school admissions process and identify areas for improvement, seeking professional development as needed and responding constructively to feedback and suggestions from all stakeholders
Cultivate partnerships in service of our mission and the success of scholars beyond Public Prep
- Researching and developing relationships with high-performing public, charter, parochial, and independent high schools in New York
- Developing relationships with programs designed to help students graduate high school and provide scholarship opportunities for students such as Prep for Prep, Oliver Scholars, A Better Chance, and TEAK
- Tracking and monitoring student application, admission, and success in high school and college prep programs (such as Prep for Prep, Teak etc.)
- Creating and maintaining relationships with external college partners to organize day trips, summer trips, and other exposure opportunities for students
Implement Public Prep's K-8 college and career readiness programming in collaboration with the Director of Special Projects
- Creating, updating, and teaching the College Knowledge curriculum in middle school, including implementation of the Naviance platform for 7th and 8th graders
- Coordinating visits from high school admissions representatives and local organizations
- Leading and scheduling College and Career Week across all Public Prep Academies with the support of the Director of Special Projects
- Coordinating working papers for 8th grade scholars
Collaborate with the external relations team and the student and family support team to strengthen relationships with existing students and families and support enrollment of new students
- Attending student recruitment events and supporting enrollment efforts by showcasing our approach to high school admissions as a benefit of a PPA education
- Supporting the planning and execution of network wide events and celebrations for middle school, 8th grade, and alumni
- Creating social media content to highlight Public Prep's K-8 college and career readiness programming and high school admissions
Ensure the successful transition of Public Prep graduates through their first two years of high school
- Managing Alumni Ambassadors for freshman and sophomores to maintain regular communication with alumni and plan annual engagement events
- Visit high schools and develop relationships with guidance counselors to monitor progress of our alumni
- Identify alumni in need of additional support in the first two years of high school and connect them with internal and external resources when necessary
Qualifications
- A Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university
- An M.A., Ed.M. or master's degree in Counseling or related field, preferred
- At least two years of prior teaching and/or high school counseling experience, preferably in a high-performing, urban school setting
- Demonstrated ability to manage complex systems of data, resources, and information in a systematic way
- Familiarity with middle school curriculum and content areas is preferred
- Demonstrated ability to effectively work with students, families, and colleagues
- Evidence of continuous learning and data analysis
- Superior communication skills
- The ability to work collaboratively
- A commitment to single-sex educationFluency in Spanish, preferred
Public Prep offers a competitive salary commensurate with experience, qualifications, internal equity, and budgeted amount for the role. The salary for this position starts at $80,000 - $90,000. We offer a comprehensive benefits package.
