Job Summary:
The Director of Finance is responsible for maintaining the financial health of
the business and ensuring compliance with funding sources and GAAP; including managing a budget of
over $2 million, budget preparation and revision, and monitoring and analyzing program fiscal
activity.
The Director of Finance directs the activities and functions of the Fiscal Department
including responsibility for creating budgets, accounting systems, cash management, grants
fiscal management, and internal control structure to ensure protection of agency assets. This
role requires high-level knowledge of nonprofit accounting, strategies for multi-year budget
projections, a deep understanding of relationship dynamics, and proven leadership in a
community-based setting. The Finance Director will work closely with the Executive Director,
the Board of Directors, and the organization's Leadership team. The Director will supervise a
Finance Associate.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Organization leadership
● Act as staff lead to the Finance Committee for the Board of Directors. Provide regular
financial reports, updates, and alerts regarding organization financial processes and
health.
● Serve as a business partner to the Executive Director on the organization’s financial,
budgeting, and administrative processes with an eye to continuously developing and
improving systems.
● Provide guidance and counsel in development of long-range plans involving strategy
development, resource allocation, work plans, timelines and financial outcomes.
● Document, implement, and enforce accounting policies and procedures.
● Collaborate with program directors and cross-departmental leadership to set budget goals
and ensure they are followed.
● Evaluate budget proposals and financial requests for viability.
● Collaborate with the Board Finance Committee to track results and compare them to key
financial targets; to conduct monthly budget to actual review and Provide reports
explaining discrepancies, communicating concerns, and providing recommendations
monthly.
● Forecast financial needs throughout the year for each program, and provide feedback to
operational team, support to prepare budget revision as needed
● Prepare cost estimates and plans, while providing necessary reporting, documentation,
and financial assessments.
● Demonstrate a thorough understanding of contractual obligations and other pertinent
matters as set forth in the business transactions of the Agency
● Advise on Capital finance procedures, Financial Management and Monitoring
● Supervise the Finance Associate to ensure efficient functioning and documentation for
all financial systems including receipts, disbursements, billing, payroll, budgeting,
accounting, cash flow management, and payroll tax compliance.
● Coordinate the annual audit and preparation of the IRS 990 form with an
independent CPA. Ensure efficient year-end financial closing, annual audit, and tax
return processes
● Ensure strong internal controls, efficient financial systems and effective procedures in
accordance with generally accepted accounting principles and best practices of
financial management
● Lead annual budgeting and planning process in conjunction with the ED; administer
and review all financial plans and budgets; monitor progress and changes and
produce monthly budget versus actual report
● Oversee all project/program grant accounting, ensuring compliance with grant program
budgets through the fund period including reporting
● Construct, present, and oversee program financial budgets on an ongoing basis for all
agency funding sources, ensure proper distribution and verify that the appropriate
resources are utilized
● Ensure all budgets and financial processes align with funder goals and within general
compliance
● Review and analyze purchases/travel/hiring requests for fund availability
● Approval of requisitions for goods, services, and personnel including temporary personnel
● Oversee management of Finance Associate responsibilities, including A/P, A/R, payroll,
and cash management
Qualifications:
The Director of Finance will have at least 10 years of professional experience, including
managing the finance and administration of a non-profit organization with a similar budget. The
individual will have experience creating and driving the analytic framework for planning and
managing organizational change. The Director of Finance will have the following experience
and attributes:
● Bachelor’s degree- in Business, Management, Finance Accounting, or related field.
(MA/MBA or CPA preferred)
● Excellent people skills, with experience collaborating in a multi-disciplinary, diverse, and
dynamic team
● Experience as a supervisor (at least two years)
● 5+ years of experience in a senior non profit finance/accounting position
● Experience should include legal, audit, compliance and budgeting
● Expertise in FASB/nonprofit accounting principles, Single Audit standards, financial
forecasting, financial data analysis
● Advanced skills in Excel, Google Suite, Adobe, Quickbooks, Salesforce, and other
administrative software required.
● Multi-lingual a plus: In languages such as Hindi, Gujarati, Urdu, Arabic, or Pashto
