Join a world-class academic healthcare system, UChicago Medicine, as the Director of Facility/ Plant Operations & Maintenance at Ingalls Memorial Hospital in Harvey, Illinois. We are seeking an experienced professional to lead all functions of the Facility Operation and Maintenance Department to ensure delivery of a reliable, safe, secure and well-maintained clinical Environment of Care and research platform. The Harvey campus includes 641,000 square feet of clinical and business occupancy contained within 10 distinct buildings of varying ages and construction. In addition, there are 13 other facilities in Calumet City, Chicago (Beverly), Flossmoor, Homewood, Lansing, Tinley Park, South Holland, along with Chesterton, Crown Point, and Valparaiso, IN. The successful candidate will be responsible for scheduling, budget and management of all aspects for facility operations and maintenance. They will be responsible for establishing compliance with safety codes and other city, state, and federal regulations, as well as managing the facilities department using performance metrics and measurement against goals set by the Executive Director.
Reporting to the Executive Director of Facilities Operations, this Director is a strategic business partner. A critical thinker and influential leader, the successful candidate will provide leadership for a department of 26 staff that operate and maintain the Ingalls Memorial Harvey Medical Center campus and the other offsite facilities. They must actively manage human, capital, and operational resources through the use of well-developed metrics and KPIs. This position has oversight for the annual budget of approximately $5 million spread over several cost centers and they also assist with managing our $5.6 million utility budget for Ingalls Memorial Hospital campus and the other offsite facilities.
Who you are:
- Bachelor’s Degree in Business or Engineering preferred. 15 years of equivalent experience in facilities management may be considered in lieu of degree.
- Minimum 10 years of Facility Operations management experience, preferably from a healthcare or hospital setting.
- Excellent verbal, written, and presentation skills. Ability to speak articulately in high-level forums and to answer difficult questions with confidence.
- Proven financial management, contract management, and negotiating skills.
- Understanding of typical Mechanical, Electrical, Plumbing, Fire Protection, Roofing, and Façade systems and equipment.
- Experience managing contractors and sub-contractors to specific contractual requirements and to fixed budgets.
- Experience with occupational or industrial safety.
- Experience with Hospital Infection Control protocols and mitigation strategies.
- Working knowledge of building automation systems (e.g., Johnson Controls, Schneider Electric).
- Ability to work with the Facilities Team to identify best approaches to issues and present solutions to Executive Director or other Leadership.
- Working knowledge of construction requirements in hospital, research, educational laboratories, or other sensitive commercial or industrial areas.
- Previous experience working in a union environment is highly desirable.
- CHFMP Certification strongly preferred.

What you’ll do as the Director of Facility/ Plant Operations & Maintenance:
- Establish goals and standards of performance. Manage Plant Department staff using KPI metrics as an indicator of performance and improvement. Use daily and weekly MDI reporting to reinforce the goals and performance in achieving the goals.
- Work daily to maximize all patient rooms and space availability. Manage department to respond to emergencies and malfunction events by assessing the situation and directing action to stabilize the situation and recover services.
- Develop and maintain processes, and protocol to be prepared to respond to emergencies as efficiently as possible. Perform drills and tests as necessary to ensure team readiness. Available to be on site to take control of a critical situation at any day or time.
- Responsible for administering an effective preventive maintenance program for all Facilities equipment. Review, upgrade and maintain the Preventive Maintenance Program with the managers and employees to ensure a high quality of service is provided to the Medical Center and all equipment is inspected and maintained at prescribed intervals.
- A leader in the development of annual operating budgets, presents the budget to Facilities leadership by March 1st of each year for approval. Review budget performance monthly and report variances and corrections to the finance department. Also collaborates with the Director for Infrastructure & Engineering on the annual update of the 2-Year Infrastructure Capital budget plan. Refines the plan as necessary to meet organizational needs.
- Ensures that the department/facility operates in accordance with hospital policies and all authorities having jurisdiction including: IDPH, CMS, TJC, OSHA, City of Chicago, and other applicable government agencies. Develops and executes Plans of Correction for any deficiencies noted and reports to Facilities Leadership and regulatory organizations.
- Demonstrates personal leadership qualities and business acumen essential to operate effectively within the institution.

Compensation & Benefits Overview
UChicago Medicine is committed to transparency in compensation and benefits. The pay range provided reflects the anticipated wage or salary reasonably expected to be offered for the position.
The pay range is based on a full-time equivalent (1.0 FTE) and is reflective of current market data, reviewed on an annual basis. Compensation offered at the time of hire will vary based on candidate qualifications and experience and organizational considerations, such as internal equity. Pay ranges for employees subject to Collective Bargaining Agreements are negotiated by the medical center and their respective union.
