This role requires strong leadership, organizational skills, and a thorough understanding of the regulatory environment, ensuring that the facility’s cleanliness and sanitation standards meet the needs of residents and comply with all relevant regulations.
Required Qualifications:
To lead the Environmental Services Department, the ideal candidate must be a qualified professional who:
- Preferably holds an Associate Degree or an equivalent combination of relevant education and experience.
- Has at least three years of supervisory experience (preferably in a skilled nursing facility’s environmental services department).
- Has the ability to read and interpret documents such as rules, equipment operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
- Possesses the ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
- Demonstrates mathematical skills, including the ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, fractions, and decimals. Must also be able to compute rates, ratios, and percentages.
- Has knowledge of pertinent regulatory agencies and understands applicable policies, codes, standards, and regulations.
- Has knowledge of infection control techniques to ensure a clean and safe environment for residents and staff.
Major Duties and Responsibilities:
As the Environmental Services Director, you will be responsible for efficiently managing the facility’s housekeeping operations and overseeing the Environmental Services staff. Your primary goal is to ensure that nursing home residents enjoy a clean, safe, and orderly living environment. Specific duties include:
- Managing housekeeping operations: Oversee the day-to-day functions of the housekeeping team to ensure the facility is maintained to the highest standards.
- Personnel management: You will have the authority to make administrative decisions regarding the hiring, training, and assignment of staff, as well as recommending employee promotions and terminations.
- Developing systems and programs: Design and implement systems to maximize the effectiveness and efficiency of housekeeping functions.
- Regular inspections: Perform daily, weekly, and monthly environmental services inspections to ensure the facility is maintained in a safe, sanitary manner according to established policies.
- Purchasing supplies and equipment: Oversee the purchase of cleaning supplies, chemicals, paper products, office supplies, and departmental equipment to meet operational needs.
- Record-keeping and reporting: Maintain all required records and reports, as outlined in the department’s policies and procedures.
- Regulatory compliance: Adhere to local, state, and federal environmental, health, and safety regulations to ensure full compliance.
- Disaster planning: Participate in facility disaster planning efforts, including ensuring staff participation in regular fire drills, maintaining emergency supplies, and conducting necessary training.
- Policy and contract decisions: Refer decisions that require policy changes or approval of outside contracts to the nursing home Administrator.
- Master cleaning plan: Consistently follow and ensure the implementation of a written, current master cleaning plan for the entire facility.
- Staff performance evaluation: Review and evaluate the work performance of assigned personnel, providing counseling and disciplinary actions according to the company’s personnel policies.
Environmental Services Director Assigned Tasks:
As the Environmental Services Director, you will have a range of essential tasks to ensure the efficient operation of the Environmental Services department. Your key responsibilities include:
- Preparing and maintaining records: Ensure all required records, reports, and evaluations are properly prepared and maintained according to department policies and regulatory requirements.
- Managing equipment and supplies: Obtain necessary equipment and supplies, ensuring they are readily accessible through organized and efficient storage systems.
- Budget coordination: Work closely with the Administrator to develop and manage the department’s budget, ensuring all financial resources are used effectively.
- Quality care contribution: Actively contribute to the facility’s efforts to maintain and improve the quality of care by participating in the following:
- Serving as a member of the QAPI (Quality Assurance and Performance Improvement) Committee.
- Attending department head meetings to collaborate and share insights with other department leaders.
- Participating in mandatory in-service training to stay updated on best practices and regulatory changes.
- Attending Infection Control Committee meetings to help maintain safe and sanitary practices across the facility.
- Product evaluation: Evaluate new products and solutions, ensuring they meet guidelines and national service standards before implementation in the facility.
