Job Summary and Qualifications
The Director (Operations and Coding) has a key role in the planning, development, implementation and maintenance of the health information management (HIM) services. The Director initiates, designs, leads, executes, and manages projects associated with HIM related and other company-wide initiatives. They will oversee the development of process improvements and provide oversight to project execution activities that increase performance of the HIM organization. The Director will provide consultative support to the HSCs. This position requires the ability to quickly synthesize multiple issues and adapt to constantly shifting priorities.
What you will do in this role:
- Develops strategy, plans, and leads initiatives that impacts the business models (e.g., shared services initiatives) and align with company vision/overall goals for health information, data management and informatics.
- Contributes to the strategic business plan for Parallon HIM.
- Provides leadership and guidance to the HSCs, and develops and maintains effective strategic relationships with the HSC/SSC COOs, Assistant COOs, Directors, and Managersto ensure HSC and overall HIM operational and compliance excellence, including refinement of the HIM shared services strategy and the operational model.
- Maintains strategic and tactical working relationships, and actively shares and collaborates with other corporate departments and key stakeholders (e.g., Clinical Services Group, Compliance (Parallon & REGS), Information Protection, Internal Audit, Clinical Documentation Improvement (CDI), Revenue Cycle Departments, Human Resources, Management Engineering, Parallon and HCA IT&S, Education, Legal, and Project Management) to drive goals and desired outcomes.
- Influence HSC leadership and solicit buy-in and support for planned initiatives to foster HSC operational accountability.
- Leads the team in measuring, monitoring, and optimizing HSC performance.
- Oversees the development, execution and maintenance of projects, tools, education (e.g., regulatory interpretations, benchmarking, productivity, forecasting, scheduling, job descriptions, policies and procedures, performance indicators, action plans, communications, HIM system and workflow technology enhancements/improvements, workflow diagrams, etc.) that are designed to maximize productivity and operational effectiveness. This can be done both independently or through the organizing and leading multiple multi-disciplinary teams.
- Provides subject matter expertise, strategy guidance and leads the team in intra and inter departmental initiatives (e.g., data abstraction, revenue cycle, case management, clinical documentation improvement, EHR, EMPI, Clinical Decision Support, document imaging, computer assisted coding, ICD-10 coding, transcription, speech recognition, NLP, data standards, MPI, ROI, analysis, unbilled management/AR, data requests, record retention/destruction, HIPAA Privacy, electronic information management).
- Leads the HIM team, provides subject matter expertise, and facilitates activities with IT&S in the identification and development and maintenance of new services, platforms and projects within the business intelligence (BI) environments.
- Oversees the Senior Managers as they conduct routine leadership calls and/or meetings to provide subject matter expertise, share best practices, revise policies and procedures, follow-up on action plans and identified opportunities and modify operational processes/workflows.
- Identifies opportunities and promotes the adherence to operational standardization and uniformity of processes across the enterprise.
- Utilizes critical thinking skills to analyze data and reports to formulate conclusions and develop improvement strategies.
- Leads and manages the evaluation, selection, and maintenance of vendor relationships for health information management coding operations products/services.
- Assists in the budget process through data collection, correlation, and data analysis.
- Participates in the execution of the Parallon HIM Talent Management Plan (i.e., sourcing, recruitment, selection, retention, coaching, motivation, and timely evaluation of staff).
- Responsible for independent problem solving, risk mitigation and contingency plans.
- Ensures that the Parallon HIM Team actively engages in continuous improvement to enhance the quality of products and services, performance, and corporate contribution.
What qualifications you will need:
- Bachelor’s degree required, ideally in areas like HIM, Business Administration, IT or Organizational/Change Management. 10 Years multi-facility and/or Vendor HIM operations experience and 7 years management/leadership may be substituted for degree requirement.
- Minimum 7 years multi-facility and/or Vendor HIM operations experience strongly preferred.
- Minimum 5 years management/leadership experience required.
- Consulting or proven work experience in areas of process reengineering, shared services, and project management strongly preferred.
- RHIA or RHIT preferred
