Walla Walla Community College (WWCC) is seeking applicants for a Director of Adult Basic Education position for the WWCC Correction Education program. This position will serve as the primary interface for Adult Basic Education in two locations, the Washington State Penitentiary (WSP) in Walla Walla, Washington and the Coyote Ridge Corrections Center in Connell, Washington. This position will have a home work-site of either WSP or CRCC and will be required to work onsite 2-3 days at each site weekly.
This position is filled to fulfill a contract awarded to Walla Walla Community College (WWCC) by the Washington State Board for Community and Technical Colleges (WSBCTC) to operate a correctional education program at WSP in accordance with an interagency agreement with the Department of Corrections. Walla Walla Community College and its employees working in a correctional education program are expected to follow all Department of Corrections (DOC) Policies, IT and other Security requirements, follow DOC Operational Memorandums, and comply with the Superintendent’s directions.

General Description:
This is a full-time, non-represented, exempt position reporting to the Dean, Corrections Education. The Director serves as the primary interface for Adult Basic Education at Coyote Ridge Corrections Center (CRCC) and Washington State Penitentiary (WSP). Walla Walla Community College (WWCC) provides basic skills education in a variety of custodial settings. Programs include, but are not limited to: GED prep, ELA, HS+, Open Doors, and IBEST. The Director of Adult Basic Education is responsible for the daily operation and management of the basic skills programs at both CRCC and WSP. The Director will ensure all WWCC education and Department of Corrections (DOC) policies and directives are adhered to. As a leader in Corrections Education this position handles numerous evolving situations unique to the corrections education environment that require crisis management, adaptability, and sound decision making.

Essential Functions:
- Provides daily leadership and oversight of Adult Basic Education programs in collaboration with the Department of Corrections Facility Leadership Team.
- Assists the Dean of Corrections Education with ensuring a variety of high-quality education programs consistent with the educational needs of the inmate population.
- Assists the Dean in administering adopted correctional education budget and expenditures.
- Oversees enrollment, registrations, and curriculum, ensuring accuracy of data and maintaining adherence to DOC, WWCC, Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities (NWCCU) and State Board of Community and Technical College’s (SBCTC) procedures.
- Develops quarterly class schedules for GED/HS+, and assists with IMU programming needs. Recommends new hires of qualified instructors, in collaboration with faculty, to the Dean of Corrections Education.
- Provides leadership and supervision to faculty and staff (recruits, selects, trains, schedules and evaluates) in accordance with collective bargaining agreements, college and accreditation policies, and DOC policies.
- Mentors faculty to ensure that course and degree learning outcomes are developed, implemented, and assessed.
- Facilitates professional development for instructors to bring contextualized lessons into the basic skills classrooms.
- Ensures effective and efficient management of the Department of Corrections (DOC) Offender Management Network Information (OMNI) class waiting lists and enrollment of students in the College ctclink system.
- Promotes and supports College efforts around diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging, Guided Pathways, and continuous improvement.
- Attends WWCC, DOC, and/or state correctional education meetings in the Dean’s absence or as requested.
- Supervises and manages the following departments and/or programs: GED prep, ELA, HS+, Open Doors, and IBEST.
- Supervise approximately seven to ten direct reports, and four to five indirect reports, in addition to part-time employees and/or adjunct faculty.
- Works in partnership and collaboration with the Corrections Education Dean to ensure alignment with area needs and goals.
- Delegation of tasks, responsibilities, and decisions as appropriate.
