We are looking for a seasoned Director or Managing Director, Litigation Client Development (CD) Leader, who will collaborate with our partners, Litigation Business Unit and practice group leaders, associates, and others across our Global Operations (GO) team to further develop existing client relationships, identify and build new client relationships, drive profitable growth, and enhance brand positioning for practice areas across Goodwin’s Litigation Department. The individual will report directly to the Chief Client Development and Relationship Officer and have the opportunity to work with other CD leaders to shape and drive firmwide client development strategy.
This position is ideal for a high-performing individual with extensive experience in successfully driving results for a diverse range of Litigation practice areas. Responsibilities include:
- Developing and leading a high performing team.
- Shaping the strategic positioning of existing and burgeoning practice areas across the Litigation Department.
- Driving strategic client relationship initiatives; integrating laterals; facilitating cross-selling and generating leads.
- Identifying and managing brand/marketing campaigns.
- Providing 1:1 business development coaching.
What You Will Do:
- In collaboration with various Litigation Leaders and other stakeholders, implement client development initiatives that strengthen existing client relationships, attract new clients, and drive profitable growth.
- Develop strategic client development plans focused on key litigation services, geographies, and clients.
- Lead targeted client engagement initiatives.
- Support efforts to generate new business opportunities.
- Enable and participate in client feedback initiatives.
- Provide day-to-day oversight to the team and ensure high-quality work product including, but not limited to:
- Current, impactful practice area content and marketing collateral.
- Pitches and proposals with a winning strategy aligned to expertise and client needs.
- Directory and award submissions for key rankings, including Chambers, Legal 500, Am Law, and Best Lawyers, that enhance our visibility and reputation in the market.
- Identify and prioritize key sponsorships and events aligned to practice area strategies and budgets.
- Manage budgets and track ROI.
- Lead or provide guidance on event planning as well as pre- and post-sponsorship and event strategy and debrief sessions.
- Attend select events to help facilitate connections and build relationships with lawyers and guests.
- Maintain relationships with key industry organizations.
- Work with the PR and Communications teams to develop and implement planning that furthers the Litigation Department’s goal for positive media exposure highlighting our expertise and experience.
- Collaborate with GO team to ensure comprehensive matter details are captured in the firm’s experience and knowledge management system.
- Assist with integration of lateral partners to enable them to maintain existing client relationships, identify opportunities with existing firm clients, promote their expertise internally and externally as part of the Goodwin platform.
- Monitor activity for key clients and prospects, as well as competitor strategies; integrate findings into ongoing plans.
- Proactively identify and implement best-in-class, scalable approaches, processes and systems that can support the Litigation Department and firm’s growth effectively.
- Drive or provide input to firm wide efforts around key initiatives, working closely with other senior Client Development leaders.
Who You Are:
- 10+ years of experience in a Client Development role, ideally in an AmLaw 100 firm.
- Minimum 6+ years of experience building and leading a high-functioning and motivated team of business development professionals.
- Prior experience leading a Client Development team supporting Litigation Practice.
- Demonstrated success in leading a strong client development Litigation team and driving outcomes in a scaled law firm.
- Has knowledge of legal industry benchmarks and peer practices, along with an understanding of our clients’ industries.
- Possesses strategic thinking and analytical capabilities to identify business growth opportunities, anticipate client needs, and offer innovative solutions.
- Exhibits executive presence and market expertise to guide and advise lawyers, helping them prioritize and achieve realistic goals, operating as a trusted advisor.
- Presents thoughts, ideas, and data (written and verbal) in an executive-ready format. Adapts communication to fit the preferences and needs of the audience or situation.
- Demonstrates integrity, sound judgement (particularly with confidential matters), discretion, emotional intelligence, and accountability.
- Has experience in deploying new processes and systems to drive efficiency and effectiveness.
- Effectively manages and prioritizes multiple projects, staying organized and delegating as needed. Shows initiative and creativity in problem-solving and collaboration at all levels.
- Flexibility, willingness and ability to work collaboratively with a wide variety of people and projects.
- Builds a high-performing team with a firm-first culture that prioritizes the needs of the firm and client over individual or team success; invests in talent to build a diverse leadership pipeline.

- Proficient in core Microsoft suite (Word, Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint), comfortable with CRM system functionality, and stay abreast with new evolving technologies.
- Travel to other Goodwin offices and key events is required.
