Job Description
The Director of Engineering leads a team of engineers that identifies and delivers value for highly complex data-driven initiatives. This role applies an intuitive and professional understanding of industry-relevant data science, analytics, and machine learning technology and frameworks to build innovative solutions leveraging the latest advancements in cloud computing. The Director works closely in collaboration with other functional areas such as decision science, product design, and enterprise teams and business partners.
This Director will lead the development and operationalization of two transformative platforms: the Labor Insights Platform (LIP) and the Finance Insights Platform (FIP). These platforms will redefine how FedEx leverages labor and financial data to drive actionable insights, optimize decision-making, and enhance overall business performance, while maintaining the highest standards of compliance and security to protect sensitive information.
The role is responsible for full-stack product engineering, encompassing data engineering, data ingestion, model operationalization, visualization, web applications, APIs, webhooks, and other consumption patterns to support internal, external, and data science user groups. While the primary responsibility for writing code lies with the team, this is considered a manager-doer role, requiring a deep familiarity with the tech stack and details of the work. The Director will be deeply involved in code, design, and architectural reviews, as well as large-scale deployments, ensuring all processes adhere to strict compliance and security standards.
Key responsibilities include:
- Platform Leadership: Oversee the end-to-end design, development, and scaling of LIP and FIP to establish a single source of truth for labor and financial data across the enterprise, with security and compliance embedded in all stages.
- Data Integration and Ingestion:
For LIP: Integrate enriched metadata (e.g., pay codes, job family, cost/location) from the Labor Strategy team while ensuring robust ingestion of raw employee data, maintaining data integrity and confidentiality.
For FIP: Manage the ingestion of financial datasets, such as general ledger (GL) data and operational cost metrics, from systems like Oracle and Azure, ensuring compliance with financial reporting regulations.
- Advanced Analytics Enablement: Develop frameworks that enable AI/ML-driven insights for labor and financial decision-making, ensuring alignment with broader platforms like OIP, CDP, and FIH, and safeguarding sensitive data throughout.
- Cross-Platform Collaboration: Align the outputs of LIP and FIP with operational insights (OIP) and clearance insights (CIP) platforms, creating a cohesive data ecosystem. Collaborate with stakeholders in FP&A, business partners, and the executive committee to ensure that platforms meet their strategic needs while adhering to all compliance standards.
- Security and Governance:
Ensure the development and implementation of robust security frameworks for both platforms to protect sensitive labor and financial data.
Deliver a proof-of-technology architecture to support data governance, access controls, and compliance with internal and external regulations.
- Outcome-Focused Delivery:
For LIP: Enable precise workforce planning by integrating labor data into actionable dashboards and insights, with security measures to prevent unauthorized access.
For FIP: Support critical financial forecasting, planning, and reporting outcomes, including KPI dashboards for leadership visibility, ensuring compliance with organizational and regulatory requirements.
- Technology Oversight: Leverage Microsoft Azure and Oracle ecosystems for platform development, ensuring scalability, resilience, and compliance. Establish standards for data engineering, visualization, and integration across tools like Power BI, prioritizing security at every level.
