Summary of Job Purpose
- The Director of Dialysis Services will be accountable for the development, implementation, evaluation and oversight of services provided by all inpatient and outpatient dialysis programs at The Health Alliance Hospitals. He/she will serve as a leader in the coordination of interdisciplinary processes that facilitate and expedite patient care services to achieve optimal outcomes. The Director will work with physicians and employees to continuously develop this service, identify opportunities for improvement and ensure patient satisfaction. He/she will foster an environment for professional growth, development and participate in research opportunities.
General Management Responsibilities

Leadership
- Provides leadership, training, and support for staff by establishing performance expectations and providing constructive feedback to reorganize and/or improve positive performance.
- Establishes both short and long-term plans to meet department needs. Shows foresight in recognizing problems.
- Effectively communicates hospital information, as well as departmental expectations and goals, to all staff by conducting regular staff meetings, posting appropriate memos, and holding individual communications sessions as needed.
- Implements policies and procedures in a fair and equitable manner.
- Effectively manages conflict resolution and conducts formal personnel counseling when needed.
Operations/Financial
- Manages the financial resources of the department effectively and efficiently.
- Prepares and manages annual departmental budget, determining the needs of the department and logically communicates reasonable requests to upper management.
- Is fiscally responsible with expenditure and shows a willingness to continuously improve.
Human Resources
- Recruits, interviews and hires competent candidates for department positions, who will be supportive of the Hospital Mission and Core Values.
- Actively works to improve the working environment to aid in the retention of staff.
- Ensures proper orientation for all new hires.
- Supports and participates in hospital recognition programs.
- Completes Initial and Annual Performance Appraisals within the required time frame.
- Ensures staff completion of mandatory education requirements.
- Ensures staff maintains updated professional licensure and certifications and forwards documents to Human Resources.
- Actively works with Employee Health to ensure that employees adhere to DOH/DNV/Infection Control Regulations.
Staff Development
- Provides ongoing training to staff to ensure productivity and knowledge.
- Ensures employee competency by providing ongoing staff development and continuing education opportunities, including staff participation in all mandated and regulatory programs.
Quality Improvement
- Implements and monitors patient safety initiatives to meet established goals.
- Reviews incident reports and patient complaints, follows up appropriately.
- Maintains target levels of customer satisfaction. Implements initiatives in the department to improve service to customers.
Essential Job Responsibilities
Develop and guide dialysis services to assess, plan, coordinate, monitor and evaluate services across the continuum; cultivate relationships with physician leaders to support this process.
- Works with interdisciplinary team to implement an effective dialysis program for all patients.
- Develop/monitor the dialysis services function to achieve optimal outcomes.
- Assure that dialysis services are in compliance with regulatory DOH and DNV accreditation standards.
- Utilize patient satisfaction data to improve care and services.
Assume a leadership role to ensure that nursing care and department goals are consistent with The Health Alliance Hospitals' goals, objectives, values and mission.
- Demonstrate positive leadership within the department and the hospital.
- Promote teamwork and team building to promote and implement effective nursing standards of care.
- Ensures that all policies/procedures are developed and revised as needed.
- Acts as a change agent to continuously improve
- Dialysis services to meet the needs of Health Alliance patients.
- Act as a role model and clinical resource to all the nursing staff.
- Facilitate and coordinate interdisciplinary teams to evaluate problems and achieve goals.
- Demonstrate teamwork philosophy through interaction with all Health Alliance managers, employees and physicians.
- Continuously evaluate dialysis services to ensure quality patient care and optimal outcomes are being achieved.
- Actively pursues program development and business growth opportunities; re: new technology, equipment, procedures, systems, services, additional sites, etc.
Effectively communicates Dialysis Services to ensure the continuity of the program through the hospital.
- Verbal and written communication is clear and well-developed.
- Ensure that lines of communication between staff, management and physicians are open; relay appropriate information in a timely fashion.
- Hold monthly staff meetings to discuss departmental issues and relay information.
- Participates on hospital committees as appropriate.
- Serves as a resource to managers, staff, physicians, and others in communication of program goals and objectives.
Perform Human Resources Management functions in a highly effective and professional manner and on a timely basis.
- Ensures adequate and competent staff are hired appropriately.
- Oversee departmental position control and staffing plans. Assures competent staff are scheduled to meet patient care needs.
- Assures employee performance reviews are consistent with job expectations, employee communication and completed within an appropriate time period.
- Ensures the development of effective and timely education and training programs/conferences for the nursing staff which meet the goals of the hospital and/or department.
- Maintains positive employee relations by identification and resolution of issues and effective conflict resolution skills.
- Ensures completion of staff training and development programs on a timely basis, including unit-based orientation and a competency program.
- Promotes staff development by providing monthly educational programs. Encourages professional growth and development in all levels of employees, encourages advanced leadership and skill development in clinical coordinators and managers.
Develop and coordinate performance improvement activities.
- Identify PI needs as appropriate; actively contribute to PI data collection, and process utilizing the PIC model.
- Consistently model attitude of continuous improvement to others.
- Document unusual occurrences appropriately. Track and analyze all incidents.
- Supports research where appropriate.
Demonstrate knowledge of information management principles.
- Exhibit an understanding of security and confidentiality of data and information. Adhere to all policies and practices regarding confidentiality of electronic communications, including, but not limited to e-mail, telephone, voice mail, fax and internet usage.
- Keep current on updates to computer system where applicable.
- Uses data and information to assist in decision-making.
Prepares each department budget (operational and capital) with input from the clinical coordinator or manager.
- Ensures that each budget is continuously monitored to remain within financial constraints.
- Direct purchase of supplies/equipment in accordance with financial parameters.
- Effectively use resources as evidenced by inventory control and pursue more efficient staffing/scheduling, while assuring appropriate quality care.
- Identify effective resources management opportunities.
Performs any other duties as assigned.
Essential Job Qualifications
- Education:
- Graduate of an accredited school of nursing; BSN degree required; masters preferred
- Experience:
- 3-5 yrs Dialysis experience; 1-3 yrs in nursing management position related to Dialysis services/Current NYS License; BLS Certifications
- Training/License:
- Certification preferred.
- Other:
- Experience in managing interdisciplinary projects and program development. Clinically competent. Ability to act as a role model/mentor. The ability to maintain strong relations with physicians, staff, and administrators is essential. Good communication and writing skills. Good analytical skills.
