Digital Substation Engineer – 10+ Year
POWER Engineers, Inc. is seeking a 10+ year Digital Substation Engineer to join our SCADA and Analytical Services (SAS) team. This position is posted in multiple POWER office locations with the ability to work remotely from a mutually acceptable location (please note in the application questions where you prefer to be located).
Roles and Responsibilities
The successful candidate will be responsible for successful business development, leadership and completion of assigned projects and for maintaining and improving client relationships as well as developing and growing new technical service areas. Completion of these functions requires technical competence in primary production roles as well as leadership competence in working with clients and mentoring and supervising team members assigned to projects. Assigned projects will include SCADA, automation, protection, and Ethernet network design of digital substations utilizing the IEC 61850 standards and processes for utility and industrial/commercial clients throughout the United States. Systems to be analyzed will include conventional and renewable generation facilities, substations, and transmission and distribution systems. Technical disciplines include the following areas:
Networking and Communications: design and configure communication paths including Station Bus, Process Bus, redundancy, segregation, and capacity of networks to support digital substations following the IEC 61850 standards; specify and design communication networks including data security and availability; travel to project sites to troubleshoot and commission network and communication systems.
Application of IEC 61850 Standards: experience modeling IEC 61850 systems using the appropriate engineering tools to configure GOOSE, SV, and MMS communications; experience using System Configuration Tools and exposure to the IEC 61850 engineering design process.
Experience in at least one of the following:
SCADA & Automation: prepare points lists of all data to be transferred between control centers and controlled apparatus, assign and program data addressing and routing information; develop, document, and implement logic and control schemes for remote and local operation of power system equipment; develop programs on various platforms for implementation of these schemes; travel to project sites to test and commission the control schemes.
System Protection and Control: develop, document, and implement protection and control schemes for remote and local operation of power system equipment using IEC 61850 standard process for digital substations; develop programs on various platforms for implementation of these schemes; travel to project sites to test and commission the control schemes.
Applicable network and communication protocols: GOOSE, Sampled Values, PTP, PRP, HSR, RSTP, DNP, Modbus, MMS, SEL Communication Protocol, TCP/IP, UDP, Ethernet, as well as legacy utility protocols.
Applicable Hardware platforms: SEL, NovaTech, GE Vernova, Omicron, Triangle Microworks, Doble, Siemens-RuggedCom, Cisco.
Applicable Software: SEL Architect, SEL AcSELerator/Grid Configurator, NovaTech NCD3, GE Enervista Suite, Helinks STS, Schneider EPAS-E, Python

Required Education/Experience
+ Requires a BSEE
+ Ten (10) + years of industry experience
Desired Education/Experience
+ Preference will be given to applicants with a proven history of completing similar projects in a consulting environment
+ Preference is also given to applicants with experience in mentoring others and in providing technical and commercial leadership in customer focused engineering projects
+ PE or equivalent
