The Department of Development Services Division of Building Development is seeking a creative, adaptable, multi-tasking supervisor to lead the building development construction Permitting team. As the supervisor of the Permits team, balancing superior customer service with a high-paced environment is paramount. This position requires excellent communication skills, time management and organizational skills, and a willingness to explore unmet potential and creative ideas of how to improve team efficiency.
About This Role:
The Development Services Technician Supervisor is responsible for leading the Building Development Construction Services Permitting Team. The Construction Services Permitting Team is a high performing team of individuals responsible for issuing a variety of construction permits ranging from new commercial to residential projects in accordance with the Virginia Uniform Statewide Building Code (VUSBC). Being an effective team member and leader is essential to succeeding in this position. Specific duties include:
Success in this position will involve applying the values of Respect, Integrity, Creativity, Teamwork, Excellence, and Responsibility (RICTER) daily.
Minimum Requirements:
High School Diploma or G.E.D. and 3 years of related (Construction permitting, Senior Development/Permit Technician, Project Issue Resolution) experience.
Preferences:
The Development Services Permits Technician Supervisor is a key member of the Department of Development Services and Building Development Division Management Team; and must possess strong leadership and organizational skills. Additionally, demonstrated experience in supervising front line counter staff and implementing process improvements, is preferred. Strong communication and people skills combined with superior problem-solving skills are essential for success. Desired related experience of 3-5 years.
Work Schedule: This position works 37.5 hours per week, typically 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday – Friday. There is the ability to telework after 6 months in the position, up to 2 days a week. - This is a telework eligible position that may revert to in-office scheduling if business needs change.
Special Requirements:
Must become certified as a Technical Assistant to the Building Official in accordance with the Virginia Uniform Statewide Building Code and the Virginia Certification Standards within 18 months.
Starting Salary Range:
$31.18 - $38.82

- Performs supervisory functions which include setting goals, preparing, and administering performance evaluations, training coordination, and implementing hiring, discipline, and termination procedures.
- Being an effective member of the branch’s leadership team.
- Coordinates and supervises customer service activities including the processing and review of development related activities and procedures; assisting staff members with complex cases and/or documents; and ensuring adherence with applicable standards, regulations, policies, and procedures.
- Being an effective team member on multi-agency process action teams.
