JOB TITLE - Development Director
CALVARY WOMEN’S SERVICES MISSION:
Calvary Women’s Services offers housing, health, education, and employment programs that empower homeless women in Washington, DC, to transform their lives.
JOB SUMMARY:
The Development Director is responsible for executing the directives of the CDO’s fundraising strategy to support its mission and long-term sustainability. This includes overseeing donor relations, major gifts, corporate partnerships, and special events. The Development Director works closely with the Chief Development Officer and Board of Directors to cultivate relationships, secure financial resources, and build a strong development program.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- In collaboration with the CDO, develop and execute area fundraising plans to ensure the achievement of financial goals; evaluate fundraising strategies and effectiveness on an ongoing basisto include donor acquisition, prospect research, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship strategies.
- Establish and nurture relationships with corporate sponsors, creating opportunities for strategic partnerships and corporate giving.
- In collaboration with the CDO, lead all fundraising initiatives, including annual campaigns, major gifts, corporate sponsorships, and special events.
- Develop and manage budgets, maintain fiscal records, and submit financial forecasts in a timely and accurate manner.
- Research and integrate best practices across all areas of this role, including special events, appeals, and donor stewardship.
- Identify new revenue streams and growth opportunities to expand the donor base.
- Ensure all development processes are executed effectively and identify opportunities to improve processes and procedures.
Donor Stewardship
- Develop strategies for expanding Calvary’s donor base, focusing on building relationships with high-net-worth individuals.
- Develop and maintain a portfolio of donors and prospects, and solicit and secure support from individuals and corporations.
- Identify, cultivate, and secure gifts from a diverse base of supporters, engaging prospective, new, lapsed, and current donors at all giving levels.
- Plan and execute annual cultivation and stewardship events, including thank you events, introductory events, open houses, and program tours.
- Lead a moves management process and create personalized stewardship plans for donors identified by prospect research, as appropriate.
- Create and publicize opportunities for donors and prospects to engage in a sustainer program, matching gift programs, community events, and more.
- In collaboration with the Communications Manager, create a strategy for and guide content creation for four annual appeals.
- Plan and execute online campaigns, including an annual sustainer campaign.
Special Events
- Develop concepts, lead the design, and oversee the planning and execution of special fundraising events, including the annual Hope Gala, silent auctions, fundraising walks, and community engagement activities.
- Oversees the execution of a sustainable volunteer structure, managed by the Development Manager, who is responsible for leveraging existing relationships and recruiting new volunteers to ensure successful event execution and drive revenue.
- Work closely with the Board of Directors, volunteers, staff, and external vendors to ensure the execution of engagement and fundraising events.
- Oversee the Development Manager’s role in coordinating event volunteers
Supervision and Leadership
- Lead, mentor, and manage the Development Manager and Development Associate and ensure alignment with fundraising goals and professional development.
- Delegate tasks and projects to team members, ensuring efficient execution of development activities.
- Supervise consultants who work on events, data, or other projects related to donors.
Data Management
- Oversee the management of the donor database (CRM), ensuring accurate records of donor communications, contributions, engagement, and financials.
- Analyze donor data to inform fundraising strategies, annual appeals, and other campaigns.
Other Duties and Responsibilities
- Collaborate with the communications staff on all development-related communications (e.g., solicitations to donors, corporate institutions, donors, and/or prospective donors; social media campaigns; annual appeals and newsletters.
- Develop messaging and collateral, in collaboration with the Communications Manager to engage current and prospective donors.
- Contribute to Calvary’s blog, newsletters, social media, or other donor communications.
- Lead tours of the programs and speak in the community on behalf of Calvary Women's Services.
- Other duties as assigned.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
- Minimum of 7 years of experience in fundraising, development, or related fields.
- Experience managing a fundraising team through effective goal-setting, prioritization, delegation, and team-building.
- Effective leadership capabilities; able to mentor and coach team in the area of responsibility and the achievement of fundraising goals.
- Proven ability to create and implement successful fundraising strategies.
- Strong relationship-building and communications skills.
- Supervisory Experience with donor management software (CRM systems).
- Knowledge of financial planning and budget management.
- Have a team-oriented mindset and the ability to work independently without direct supervision.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills.
- Strong attention to detail.
- Proficiency in MS Office, particularly Word and Excel.
EDUCATION:
- Bachelor’s degree in a related field.
WORK ENVIRONMENT REQUIREMENTS:
- Own transportation is required for trips out of the office.
- Move, lift, carry, push, pull, and place objects weighing less than or equal to 30 pounds without assistance.
- Reach overhead and below the knees, including bending, twisting, pulling, and stooping.
- Climbing: Ascending or descending multiple flights of stairs, using feet and legs and/or hands and arms.
- Stand, sit, or walk for an extended period.
