Overview of the Role
The Director of Development will oversee the creation of utility-scale battery storage projects throughout California, focusing on the San Francisco Bay Area and Los Angeles Basin. This position involves leading development initiatives for the Company's existing 9 GW portfolio, greenfield projects, and acquisitions. You will effectively communicate complex development scenarios and address issues from inception through construction, with travel as needed for site selection, development, and commercial activities.
Daily responsibilities include managing permitting, site control, interconnection, power marketing, design/engineering, procurement, construction (EPC), financing, and other essential aspects of energy storage project development in California.
- Analyze and manage information flow from internal experts and external consultants.
- Own project inputs and coordinate updates with relevant internal teams.
- Monitor project progress, risks, opportunities, and economics, providing thorough analysis and risk assessments.
- Make informed decisions and prioritize resource allocation based on schedule dependencies and financial implications.
- Maintain a comprehensive understanding of California's energy storage market, including regulatory and competitive factors.
- Track project milestones, manage schedules and budgets, and coordinate across various disciplines.
- Support due diligence for acquisitions.
- Negotiate lease and purchase agreements for site control.
- Coordinate engineering efforts for permits and interconnection.
- Collaborate closely with the engineering team on design and EPC processes.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Business, Construction, Finance, Economics, Engineering, Environmental Science, Management, or a related analytical field.
- At least ten (10) years of relevant experience, including five (5) years in energy storage or renewable energy development, with expertise in project management, permitting, offtake negotiation, interconnection, CEQA, planning, and real estate.
- Proven success in developing utility-scale energy storage or renewable energy projects in California.
- Familiarity with local planning and building department regulations.
- Experience in preparing, negotiating, and finalizing commercial agreements.
- Ability to manage a substantial workload across a diverse portfolio while prioritizing tasks effectively.
- In-depth knowledge of the CAISO market, particularly regarding interconnection and regulatory matters.
- Capability to assess development status and facilitate critical decision-making.
- This position supports a hybrid work policy, allowing remote work until the San Francisco office opens.
- Willingness to travel domestically up to 30% of the time, including some overnight trips.
- Compliance with ENGIE's COVID vaccination and testing policies is required.
- Adherence to all ENGIE ethics and safety policies is mandatory.
Compensation
Salary Range: $146,300 - $224,135 USD annually
This range reflects the average expected salary for qualified candidates. Actual salary may vary based on geography, experience, education, and other factors.
In addition to base pay, this role is eligible for a competitive bonus/incentive plan.
