Position Summary:
The basic function of the Design Engineer is to design and organize the fixtures. Other functions are to establish capable processes, identify and implement process inputs, maintain cost effectiveness, and insure customer requirements are met.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
- This position is responsible for reviewing and creating a finalized method in the ERP system for all new parts and also assisting with processing any repeat work that may need to be reviewed. The Mfg. Review form in GOLD will be utilized to get feedback from subject matter experts, the Design Engineer will determine the best series of operation based on this input. The Design Engineer is responsible for scheduling all new jobs using the ERP system. Define, design & or procure all special tooling and gauging required in order to maintain repeatability goals and justify associated costs.
- Using the CAD system, design fixtures and special tooling
- Determine the cost effectiveness of hard tooling or custom fixture design.
- Review data to determine material and labor requirements and develops a cost estimate within the time frames as assigned by the due dates from the customer.
- Work directly with shop personnel to improve worker efficiency, reduce set up times and material waste, while utilizing and implementing lean techniques.
- Secure quotes on standard subcontracted work and verify the competitiveness of such quotes. ?
- Determine the requirements of the customer for documentation and any qualifying requirements that might be specified along with revisions of methods of operation or other changes to increase production or improve standards.
- Study blueprints, sketches, product specifications, or sample parts to determine dimensions and tolerances of finished work piece sequence of operations and setup requirements. Insures customer process specifications are met in order to optimize machine up time and throughput.
- Maintain cooperative working relationships with all company employees, customers, owners, suppliers, etc.

Qualifications:

- Read, write and speak English fluently.
- Conceptualize work-holding fixtures/layout and convert customer specification into solid models.
- Ability to:
- develop detailed shop drawings and specifications
- work independently with minimal supervision
- be detail driven
- apply sound business judgment to all decisions
- Proven CAD experience and capabilities in a manufacturing industry. Preferred the Manufacturing experience in a field closely related to GMM.
- Mathematical Skills: Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as part layout, force, tonnage, percentages, tool feeds and speeds. Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra, geometry and trigonometry.
- Reasoning Ability: Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in written, oral or diagram form and deal with abstract and concrete variables.
- Work well in a team environment, demonstrate excellent oral and written communication skills, and maintain a positive attitude and willingness to learn.
Education and/or Experience:
- High School Diploma, GED, or equivalent work experience
- Two year degree and/or equivalent experience.
- Minimum of 2 years in an Engineer discipline or fixture design experience.
- Preferred: Bachelor's degree (BS) in engineering disciplines (mechanical or industrial) and must be willing to accept training to sharpen any skill deficiencies.
Physical Demands Include:
- Sitting, standing, and walking.
- Use of fingers, hands and arms to operate office equipment.
- Being able to see (20/25 vision with or without glasses) and hear (with mechanical assistance if necessary) sufficient to understand and comprehend individual one-on-one conversations.
Work Environment:
This person will work in the office area; temperature controlled environment with moderate noise. Often he or she will spend a significant amount of time out in the plant working with operators. The plant setting involves manufacturing equipment with others working in close proximity.
