Step 1: Take an Initial Written Exam
Visit Public Safety Testing to schedule an initial exam.
On the website, choose a testing date, time, and location that is most convenient for you. Tests are offered regularly at various locations across the country or can be taken at home. For local candidates, in person testing is currently scheduled once a month in Spokane, Washington.
Step 2: Online Application
Upon passing the Public Safety Testing written exam you must complete the Kootenai County Sheriff’s Office Entry Level Patrol employment application. Your PST score must be less than six (6) months old.
Step 3: Physical Agility Test
After passing the oral board interview, will need to pass the Idaho Physical Agility Test before the department begins your background investigation. This will be conducted by the Kootenai County Sheriff’s Office or at an Anytime Fitness for out of state applicants (see PST website for further details).
Step 4: Oral Board Interview
Your application will be reviewed and once it has been verified that all requirements have been met you will be invited for an interview. Candidates located out of the local region will be offered a zoom interview.
Step 5: Background Investigation
Upon successfully passing the physical agility test you then undergo an extensive background investigation. Passing the background investigation requires an extraordinary level of integrity and honesty.
Step 6: Final Requirements (Conditional Offer)
With an offer of employment, you will be hired upon passing the following:
- Psychological Evaluation
- Polygraph Examination
- Medical Examination
- Pre-employment Drug Test

NOW SOME INFORMATION ON THE POSITION:
We are now accepting applications for Entry Patrol Deputies:
- $29.90 per hour to start (includes .50 shift differential)
- Extensive paid training.
- Public Employees Retirement System of Idaho (PERSI), a pension plan with five year vesting, 13.26% employer contribution, and a lifetime payout upon retirement.

BONUS DETAILS:
For entry level candidates only ** Upon hire, a $500.00 payment is made in the first regularly scheduled paycheck. An additional $500.00 payment is made upon certification.
An additional $2500.00 relocation bonus is offered for candidates who qualify. All payments would be in gross wages and subject to applicable withholdings.
