The award-winning Police department is one of the most visible Village departments and works to keep the Orland Park community safe and oversees the enforcement of laws and ordinances. We currently seek an experienced, mature, and responsible law enforcement professional to join department leadership as Deputy Police Chief. This individual will personally participate in complex police problems and exercise supervision over subordinate police personnel.
Key Responsibilities:The Deputy Chief will perform a variety of complex tasks to include manage the Divisions of the Police Department; confer with Division Commanders on routine and special matters; assist in planning departmental programs and operating procedures; conduct scheduled and unscheduled inspections of units; evaluate work of subordinates; recommends and administers disciplinary action; supervise the preparation of necessary records and reports relating to activities, and reviews and files reports prepared and submitted by subordinates; administer the Tow Hearing procedures and coordinates its process; assist in developing and controlling annual budget; command the Emergency Service and Disaster Agency (ESDA) functions and operations; manage the Field Training Officer (FTO) Program; coordinate the Department participation with the South Suburban Emergency Response Team and acts as liaison for the Department to the team’s leadership; coordinate all emergency management planning and procedures in development of the Emergency Operation Plan and other such activities as required; conduct external request background investigations; and manage the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) activities of the department.
Additionally, this important role manages and oversees internal review investigations involving all supervisory employees of the department; evaluates the Command staff; coordinates the Department Inspection and awards program and other special projects as directed; and assumes command of the department, manages, and oversees managerial responsibilities of the Chief of Police, in the absence of the Chief as directed.
Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills:A bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university is preferred. Ten (10) years of experience in the field of criminal justice is required. Five (5) years of experience in police administrative work is preferred. Certification of Law Enforcement Officer from the Illinois Law Enforcement Training and Standards Board in accordance with ILCS 50/705 and a valid Illinois driver's license is also required.
The ideal candidate will possess the ability to lead and direct the activities of police/civilian personnel, use sound judgment in all matters and the ability to deal effectively with the public. Must have the ability to speak clearly, understand, and communicate orally and in writing. This individual must be able to handle pressure in any type of situation and successfully complete, on a semi-annual basis, the Power Test established by Illinois Law Enforcement Training and Standards Board as required by department policy.
The Deputy Police Chief is expected to establish and maintain effective working relationships with a variety of individuals contacted while performing work duties.
Compensation & Benefits:The annual salary for this represented position is $179,601.03 annually ($86.3467 hourly) per the union scale.
