Deputy Director
The Government and Civic Relations (GCR) group is adding an experienced Deputy Director, who will serve as a senior advisor and strategist for our work. We are charged with building confidence and trust in the SF Fed by elevating the work of the Bank to inform policymakers, engage stakeholders and support our dual mandate. We provide counsel to internal leaders through a lens of current events, news and emerging issues, to make business decisions, pinpoint reputational risk, and surface opportunities. We work collaboratively, both internally and externally, to support a healthy and inclusive economy.
The Deputy Director will work with the GCR Vice President to develop and execute engagement plans and strategies. This role will be the federal affairs lead for the team, focused on developing and maintaining relationships with key offices and stakeholders in Congress. This role will also act as an internal advisor, working with the GCR VP to provide strategic counsel to senior leaders, monitoring the external environment for issues and proposals that could impact the FRBSF/FRS’s ability to carry out its public service mission.
Essential Responsibilities:
- Assist the Vice President of Government and Civic Relations to build and complete near and long-term goals, strategies, and tactics for engagement with key external stakeholders including federal, state, and local partners
- Provide strategic and solution-oriented counseling and advice to the Government and Civic Relations Vice President, Reserve Bank President and other senior leaders, in support of business area objectives
- Oversee and lead the team’s federal government relations work, including developing an annual engagement plan, leading various projects and work streams, and collaborating with other team members for support
- Develop and maintain strong, collaborative relationships and serve as a champion for the Bank with external stakeholders, with a particular focus on relationships with Congressional staff
- Monitor the external environment and be an internal advisor for the Bank, briefing key leaders on issues and proposals that could impact the FRBSF/FRS’s ability to carry out its public service mission.
- Develop messaging strategy, with a focus on internal advising around landscape, strategic approach and risk assessment; act as a thought and strategy partner within the organization.
- Develop and participate in routines and processes that streamline information flows and improve understanding of landscape, with ability to quickly adapt and lead others through change
Additional Responsibilities
- Lead the tracking and reporting of principal- and staff-level engagements to ensure diverse and geographically representative outreach across the District.
- Support the recruitment, onboarding, training, supervision, and evaluation of interns assigned to the department.
- Engage with key partners across the Public Engagement team, including Regional Executives and Community Development, as well as other leaders and teams across the bank
- Participate in the FRS Government Relations Working Group and other committees and cross-functional teams as needed.
Requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree preferred in Political Science, Public Policy, Government, Communications or a related field or equivalent experience.
- Typically requires ten+ or more years of related experience in government relations and/or public affairs, preferably with experience working for or with members of Congress, a government agency, or other elected office. Experience in Washington, D.C. and/or with the Federal Reserve System required.
- Ability to quickly and succinctly synthesize complex streams of information and interpret sophisticated reputational issues.
- Outstanding attention to detail and project management skills; some events experience preferred.
- Excellent communication skills (verbal, written, and presentation).
- Outstanding judgement, able to work in a non-partisan manner, and maintain confidentiality.
- Willing and able to travel up to 30%.

Hiring Salary Range: $183,100 - $240,000 (San Francisco)
Final salary and offer will be determined by the applicant’s background, experience, skills, internal equity, and alignment with market data.
Locations: San Francisco, Los Angeles, Seattle, Portland or Salt Lake City
