San Mateo County Health has an exciting new opportunity for a Deputy Director of Nursing Services for Acute Psychiatric Services at San Mateo Medical Center.
Working closely with in San Mateo County Health and with the Chief Nursing Officer (CNO) of San Mateo Medical Center, the Deputy Director of Nursing Services for Acute Psychiatric Services will assess, plan, evaluate, and monitor all aspects of nursing care delivery in acute psychiatry to ensure a supportive healing and recovery milieu; partner with and coordinate services with other divisions and departments, supporting a collaborative effective interdisciplinary team; work collaboratively with the medical staff, executive management, other San Mateo County Health divisions, and community stakeholders to develop policies and procedures to maintain quality of care and safety for patients and staff. This position will sit on the San Mateo Medical Center (SMMC) Executive Management Team, in addition the successful candidate will be an integral part in moving forward SMMC's strategic plan. The successful candidate will also need to understand LEAN principles and will need to participate in further development, evolution and spread of San Mateo County's own LEAP (Learn, Engage, Aspire, and Perfect) efforts including the daily management system and real time problem solving.
This position may be appointed as Chief Nursing Officer (CNO) for the San Mateo Medical Center by the Chief Executive Officer.

- Developing and executing a vision for how to position the Service to best meet the present and future needs of the community.
- Optimizing the Services coordination with the larger County-wide Behavioral Health System of Care.
- Overseeing all day-to-day operations in the Psychiatric Emergency Department (PES), the Acute Inpatient Psychiatric Unit, and any other behavioral health programs as assigned.
- Working closely with the Chief Nursing Officer and the Behavioral Health Nurse Managers and Nurse Educators to optimize nursing care.
- Working closely with the Medical Director of Psychiatry to optimize physician performance and retention.
- Understanding and optimizing service line financial sustainability with the Finance Department.
The ideal candidate will have:
- Clinical experience and expertise in Psychiatric Nursing.
- Interest in advancing Psychiatric Nursing Practice with integration of evidence-based practices.
- Commitment to enhancing through Nursing Practice a "Recovery" Milieu.
- Interest in building relationships within the community and within San Mateo County Health with our partners in Behavioral Health Services.
- Knowledge of the principle and practices of behavioral health care administration and management including current trends. Statutes/ laws, health care policy, planning, finances, and related issues.
- Ability to analyze the service line accurately and develop recommendation to ensure the service efficiency.
- Ability to communicate effectively with diverse audiences including Board of Supervisors.
- Master's degree in Nursing or in a related health care field or a written plan to obtain a Master's degree.
