Description
Oil Change International is looking for a Deputy Communications Manager for an 8 month contract to cover parental leave. The dates of employment will be January 2025 - August 2025, with some flexibility on start and end dates. This role will provide leadership support within the Communications Team and will be responsible for supporting the Communications Director in carrying out the day-to-day work of the team.
Travel
Up to 3-4 weeks of travel should be expected throughout the course of this contract. All expenses will be covered.
Responsibilities
Team Management & Strategy Development (40%)
- Work closely with OCI’s Communications Director to scope, design, and implement communications strategies to support ongoing work and activities;
- Plan and execute communications strategies to advance our messaging and campaign goals around key international political moments and report launches;
- Review communication outputs from across the organisation to ensure consistent quality;
- Help to organize a weekly communications call each Monday running through all of the upcoming activities for the week; and
- Help update the organizational calendar with upcoming communications activities.
Content Creation & Dissemination (50%)
- Collaborate with the Communications Director on journalist management and support efforts across the organization to get stories placed;
- Create compelling and impactful materials to reach target audiences. This could include press releases, fact sheets, messaging guides, emails to supporters, blog posts, web content, social media content, graphics, videos, partner toolkits, opinion pieces, and more;
- Ensure all content is aligned with campaign messaging and brand guidelines;
- Use OCI’s communications platforms to set up and send campaign-related press releases, supporter emails, and social media posts; and
- Develop communications materials to support advocacy efforts such as petitions, action alerts, and campaign toolkits.
Administration (10%)
- Update and maintain quarterly and annual goals and individual work plans;
- Participate constructively in staff and team meetings;
- Coordinate messaging and activities with OCI’s cross-team Communications staff;
- Help maintain OCI’s shared calendar of upcoming projects and deadlines; and
- Respond to administrative requests in a timely and courteous manner, including submitting timesheets and expense reports by established deadlines.
About You
Required Qualifications, Skills, and Abilities
- 5+ years working in a communications-oriented role, with at least 3 years at a senior level;
- Excellent writing and editing in English;
- Strong written, verbal, and interpersonal communications skills;
- Strategic communications experience, including: pitching stories to media, writing press releases, and developing other communications materials (emails to supporters, drafting social media materials, writing op-eds, etc.);
- Commitment to the mission of Oil Change International, passion for advocacy and campaigning, and a collaborative, team-oriented work style;
- Sensitivity to issues of privilege, class, and race, and dedication to incorporating principles of justice into organizational work and alignment with OCI’s values.
Desired Qualifications, Skills, and Abilities
- Experience working with Meltwater, ActionNetwork, Wordpress;
- Experience working internationally;
- Experience working at a climate, environment, or social justice oriented non-profit;
- Advocating on climate and energy justice or other social or environmental justice issues;
- Familiarity with climate and energy policy, specifically supply-side fossil fuel policy;
- Experience working in coalition / coordinating with civil society partners.
