About the Job
The Department Manager 2 manages the Juvenile Detention staff the Wayne County Detention Facility. The Department Manager 2 is responsible for the day-to-day operations of the facility during business and non-business hours, including holidays and weekends.
- Required Tasks
- Provide leadership of Juvenile Detention Specialist (JDS) staff.
- Provide oversight and develops plans for pod management of residential care and youth programming.
- Provide oversight of Operations Shift Assignment Schedules for JDS Supervisors and Juvenile Detention Specialist staff.
- Review and approve all log books and all other operational reports reviewed and/or completed by JDS Supervisors.
- Train and evaluate Juvenile Detention Specialist.
- Plan, supervise and coordinate day- to- day operations including crisis intervention, confinements, lockdowns, staffing shortages, Temporary Disaster Plans.
- Supervise and provide direction and training to JDS Supervisors on a day-to-day basis.
- Effectively communicate to JDF staff, JDS Supervisors, administrators, management team, staff, residents and outside agencies and community groups.
- Maintain current knowledge and services available to assist and educate staff to rehabilitate juveniles and detention care.
- Manage building during non-business hours ensuring efficient operation of staff while maintaining safety and security.
- Conduct departmental investigations, issue disciplinary actions, and develop training and Corrective Action Plans for operations' staff.
- Provide direct oversight and management of all operations post i.e., Master Control, Intake, Admissions, Classification, Transportation, Key Control, Visitation, Medical, and Identified Specialized Housing Pods.
- Conduct facility rounds to ensure the facility is secured i.e., functioning cameras, secure doors are closed, juvenile count is accurate, etc.
- Complete and submit daily shift reports.
- Transport juvenile residents via County vehicle to and from appointments or due to emergency as needed.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- Education/Experience Requirements
- Bachelor's Degree in Human Services, Criminal Justice, Psychology, or related field; AND
- Five (5) years' experience in a secure correctional setting, or child caring institution; AND
- Two (2) years supervisory experience; AND
- A valid State of Michigan Driver's license and an acceptable and safe driving record.
- Special Conditions
- Employees must be cleared to work in a childcaring institution by Child Welfare Licensing/Child Protective Services. Candidates that have lived outside of the state of Michigan must obtain clearance from that State.
