- Perform the logical and physical design of the database, including triggers, indexes, dimensional design, capacity planning, and author and maintain stored procedures.
- Work closely with the application development teams, project teams, to design the most efficient data structure for the environment (transaction processing, data warehousing, statewide data usage, etc.) Document design decisions and include state standards and current industry best practices during design, logical database normalization to 3rd normal form, identification of statewide data sharing opportunities, etc. Include design considerations should also include awareness and knowledge of the development and execution environment, such as Service Oriented Architectures (SOA), web services, client-server, and mainframe.
- Perform monitoring of the DBMS systems, looking at memory usage cache rates, disk utilization, index utilization, security activity etc. Take a pro-active response in tuning the environment so the application runs quickly and smoothly as well as preventative measures to prevent outages. Provide SQL tuning and interface support and advice as required. Provide senior-level response to service request tickets and solve associated database issues as needed. Remain up-to-date in current trends and methods of system and database monitoring, tuning, and troubleshooting.
- This position will determine appropriate actions to be taken for tuning purposes and for responses to monitoring issues found. This position will provide primary support for the Department of natural Resources, leading the effort that provides database strategy ,processes, guidelines, and standards for mission critical systems.
- Typically, this duty will see items that need adjusting, such as memory usage, disk load, cache ratios, transaction issues, etc that may affect multiple databases and applications. Guidance will come from past experience of what this position has done before, from what others on the database services team have done, to handle DBMS environment issues.
- Creation and support of nightly, weekly, monthly maintenance plans for database backups, reorgs, file size and disk usage. Provide senior-level experience for database and table recovery as needed.
