Position: DBA Manager
Location: Syracuse, NY (Hybrid remote)
Permanent/direct hire position
Key Responsibilities:
•Database Management & Leadership:
Oversee and manage the end-to-end lifecycle of SQL Server databases and cloud databases, ensuring performance, security, availability, and reliability. Take responsibility for high-availability strategies and disaster recovery planning. This person is expected to have a great attitude to problem solving and customer service.
•Team Management:
Lead, mentor, and manage a team of 5-6 DBAs and database engineers. Foster a collaborative environment and provide direction on day-to-day activities, while also promoting professional growth and ensuring optimal team performance.
•Cloud & Azure Expertise:
Manage and optimize Azure cloud environments (IaaS, PaaS, SaaS), specifically Azure SQL Database, Azure Data Factory, and Azure Synapse Analytics. Lead cloud adoption and migration projects, moving database workloads to Azure while ensuring seamless integration with existing systems.
•Systems Integration & Middleware Management:
Oversee the integration of databases with other critical systems and applications. Manage middleware platforms to ensure smooth, efficient communication and data flow between disparate systems and technologies.
•Database Development & Performance Tuning:
Work closely with development teams to ensure that database design and development best practices are followed. Optimize database queries, troubleshoot performance issues, and manage data indexing, backup, and recovery strategies.
•Data Warehousing & ETL:
Manage data warehousing solutions, implementing ETL processes for efficient data extraction, transformation, and loading. Ensure data architecture supports business intelligence and analytics needs.
•Automation & Scripting:
Leverage PowerShell scripting for database automation, including monitoring, performance tuning, and backups. Develop scripts to streamline repetitive tasks and improve operational efficiency.
•Operations Support:
Provide support for 24/7/365 operational systems, including patch management, system monitoring, incident resolution, and troubleshooting. Ensure database systems are stable, secure, and performing optimally.
•Cloud Adoption & Migration Strategy:
Lead efforts in cloud adoption and migration, ensuring smooth transition of on-premise databases to the cloud while maintaining business continuity. Collaborate with cross-functional teams to plan and execute cloud migration strategies.
•Cross-Functional Collaboration:
Work closely with developers, DevOps, infrastructure teams, and business leaders to ensure database solutions align with the overall company goals. Provide technical leadership during major system upgrades and integrations.
•Security & Compliance:
Ensure databases meet security standards and regulatory requirements. Implement security measures such as encryption, access control, and data masking to protect sensitive information.
•Strategic Database Planning:
Contribute to the strategic direction of database and cloud technologies, providing expertise in architecture. best practices, trends, and innovations in database management, cloud computing, and data storage solutions.
Qualifications:
•Experience:
•
o12+ years of experience as a Database Administrator or Manager, with at least 5 years in a managerial capacity, overseeing a team of DBAs and data engineers.
oExtensive experience with SQL Server products, including performance tuning, optimization, and high-availability configurations.
oSignificant experience managing legacy & Azure cloud platforms (IaaS, PaaS, SaaS), particularly Azure SQL, Azure Data Factory, Azure Synapse Analytics, and cloud-based database migration.
oProven track record in cloud adoption and cloud migration for database environments.
oStrong expertise in middleware and systems integration, working with cross-platform solutions and ensuring seamless data flow.
oExpertise in data warehousing and ETL processes for business intelligence.
oProficiency in PowerShell scripting for database automation and management tasks.
oExperience in managing/ supporting infrastructure for analytics tools like Power BI & Tableau
•Educational Background:
•
oUndergraduate degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics, Statistics, Physics, or a related STEM field (or equivalent experience).
•Skills & Competencies:
•
oStrong knowledge of database performance optimization and troubleshooting techniques.
oExperience with DevOps and infrastructure-as-code practices for managing database environments.
oExcellent leadership, communication, and collaboration skills in a complex, matrixed organization.
oAbility to manage large, cross-functional projects and work under pressure.
oFamiliarity with Agile methodologies and tools for managing database-related projects.
oKnowledge of gaming industry practices is preferred but not essential.
Preferred Skills:
•Experience with data lakes and unstructured data storage solutions.
•Certification in Azure or SQL Server.
•Familiarity with machine learning or data analytics tools on Azure.
•Experience with containerization technologies like Docker and Kubernetes for database management and CI/CD orchestration.
