About the Job
GENERAL PURPOSE:
With general supervision and guidance, participates in the design, implementation and dissemination of advanced analytics and data science projects. The data scientist works within a framework of reporting areas that include the Center for Integrated Research Computing (CIRC), Office of Institutional Research (OIR), and University Information Technology (UIT). The Office for Data Insights (ODI) develops advanced analytics, including modeling and simulation, to provide leadership with the insights required to make evidence-based decisions. As a member of this team, the Data Scientist supports the development and evolution of advanced statistical methods, including machine learning capabilities and works in partnership with team members to solve complex problems, ensure robust, scalable analytics solutions and implement them efficiently and effectively across the academic enterprise.
**SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES:**
+ Works with senior team members to translate complex data into insights and compelling stories.Presents data models, analyses and visuals (including dynamic visuals such as dashboards) to internal and external stakeholders. Iterates and refines based on feedback.
+ Works with project director and end-users to understand project requirements. Understands underlying requirements and formulates, designs and executes analytical solutions to support them.
+ Provides scalable solutions and collaborates on dissemination efforts.Creates and implements data science solutions to support analytical efforts and expand dashboard capabilities. Works with senior team members to develop and manage project plans. Executes and evolves project plans.
+ Develops preliminary analyses and prototypes. In collaboration with senior team members, analyzes and models structured data and implements algorithms to support analysis using advanced statistical and mathematical methods. Develops and implements robust, reproducible processes to prepare, extract and enrich a variety of structured and unstructured data sources.
+ Writes, tests and deploys queries and/or API connections to internal and external databases. Cleans and manipulates data so that it is in a usable format for others. Designs and builds data marts and data warehouses to support advanced reporting scenarios. Links data from multiple sources and stores it in a format that is easy to query.
+ Maintains current knowledge base and expertise relative to the technology and software used by related to the functional areas being supported.
+ Designs and develops prototypes of data models, ML pipelines, dashboards and reporting. Cultivates new data sources to offer insights and analyses needed for research and decision-making.

**REQUIREMENTS:**
+ Bachelor's degree in related discipline such as Computer Science, Business, Mathematics, Statistics, Science or Engineering required;
+ Master's degree preferred
+ 2-3 years of related experience required;
+ Or equivalent combination of education and experience preferred
+ Considerable experience with relational databases preferred
+ Fluency in the use of R in data science, including project-focused programming using appropriate data science packages (caret, Prophet, purr, etc.) required.
+ Demonstrated skills in the production of dashboards that illustrate data science products using R Shiny, Observable (or d3.js equivalent), Plotly, or advanced Tableau capabilities required.
+ Demonstrated ability to leverage SQL to harmonize large data sets, including the use of Google Big Query required.
+ Strong attention to detail, ability to develop creative solutions to complex problems and strong critical thinking skills required
+ Strong analytic, qualitative and quantitative data analysis skills, with demonstrated ability to break down complex problems into phased deliverables required
+ Ability to work independently and successfully complete assigned tasks on time with limited oversight required
+ Excellent communication and presentation skills, including the ability to describe data science concepts to lay/non-expert audiences required
