The Cytotechnologist examines slides microscopically to detect abnormal, atypical cells that may be present. Provides specimen processing and rapid on-site evaluation of FNA/FNB and biopsy specimens to the surgical suites as requested.

Essential Functions
•Microscopically examines human cellular samplesin accordance with departmental procedures and policies
•Prepares specimens forrapid on-sitecytologic exam(ROSE).
•Stagesresection and dissection specimens for histological assessment.
•Considersclinical history of the patient, marks pertinent findings; makespreliminarycytologic interpretationin consultation
withattendingpathologist.
•Follows pathology reports and communicates with endoscopists and pathologists when there is discrepancy between onsite
andfinalinterpretations.
•Liaisonbetween lab and outside facilities when specimens are sent out for expert adjudication and reports back to
endoscopists.
•Performs and documents all quality control and prevention maintenance procedures.
•Performs quality control checks.
•Assists in various research projects; performs other related dutiesincludingteaching ofendoscopystaff and visiting trainees.
•Provides interpretation of special test results, such asassessment of mucosal biopsies on-site,thatwillassist with endoscopist
intra-proceduredecision-making.
•Maintains research database pertaining to endoscopicspecimens procured at EUS, ERCP, anddocuments researchrelated
data.
•Usetelepathology for emergencyconsultations.
•Use digital analysis for tissue quantificationand categorizationfor research.
•Performs specimen receiving and processing
•Regularlyreportsall abnormal findings to thecytopathologist and patient caregiver as required
•Assumes one or more of the followingresponsibilities: projects, teaching, tech in charge, and evaluation of new technology.
•Maintainsreasonably regular, punctual attendanceconsistentwith Orlando Health policies, the ADA, FMLA and other federal,
state and local standards.
•Maintainscompliance with all Orlando Health policies and procedures.
Other Related Functions
•Maintains proper inventory of supplies.
•Responsible for maintaining an active role in thelaboratory quality improvement program including performance and
evaluation of key quality indicators.
•Follows the established policies and procedures to meet regulatory and accrediting agencies requirements.
•Practices infectioncontrol and safety practices and keeps a clean and organized work area.
•Maintains confidentiality of patient record, hospital and departmental matters at all times.
•Works with laboratory staff to address clinical issues promptly.
•Coordinates withManagerto implement quality improvement initiatives.
•Participatein live symposiums bothin procedure rooms and in off-site laboratory teaching settings.
•Assist endoscopists withdraftingof manuscripts, particularly on ROSE and other related matters.
Education/Training
Graduate from an approved school of Cytotechnology. Bachelor’s degree in science or Cytotechnology.
Licensure/Certification
Current license as Cytotechnologist in the State of Florida Certified Cytotechnologist (ASCP) by the American Society of Clinical Pathologists
Experience
ROSE experience required. Passed research, ethicsandcompliance training (CITI).
