Title: Cytotechnologist - Cytology

Summary:
The Cytotechnologist in Cytology is responsible for examining and interpreting cell samples to detect abnormalities, such as cancer or infections. They prepare, screen, and evaluate cytology slides, including gynecological (e.g., Pap smears) and non-gynecological specimens. The role involves making initial diagnoses, collaborating with pathologists for final diagnoses, and maintaining accurate records.
Key Responsibilities:
- Ensures that specimens received in the laboratory are handled properly as to identification, numbering and preparation as smears or cell blocks.
- Makes initial diagnosis on all cytopathology consultations.
- Makes final diagnosis on all negative gynecological material; refers all abnormal gynecological material and all non-gyn material to pathologist for final diagnosis.
- Utilizes laboratory computer information system to enter results correctly and enter necessary QC/QA information. Must be able to retrieve necessary patient information.
- Recommends changes in procedures to address quality issues and provide customer satisfaction.
- Participates in formal and informal education as related to clinical cytology and cytopathology. Maintains expertise through attendance of continuing education programs for personal growth and development.
- Functions in a collegial and collaborative relationship with laboratory staff and other medical professionals in other departments, including radiology, OPC, surgery and oncology, to manage and plan for patients.
- Records and maintains accurate records regarding slides screened and hours required for screening.
- Maintains established hospital and departmental policies and procedures, objectives, quality assurance, safety, environmental and infection control. Complies with requirements of accreditation and regulatory agencies by attending mandatory in-services and continuing laboratory education and participating in continuous quality improvement.
- Performs other duties as directed.
Job Requirements:
- Must be ASCP certified in cytotechnology with a baccalaureate degree or equivalent from an accredited college/university. Requires effective interpersonal skills and attention to detail.
- Must be able to move continuously about hospital and between workstations; and prolonged periods of standing.
- Must be able to understand directions and be able to communicate and respond to inquiries; requires effective interpersonal skills.
- Must be able to tolerate exposure to disease bearing specimens, odorous chemicals, carcinogens, mutagens, low-level radiation, electrical hazards and flammable liquids.
- Must be able to differentiate colors.
- Must be able to occasionally move, lift and/or carry lightweight materials and equipment weighing up to 50 pounds up to 5% of the time.
- Must be able to input and retrieve information from computer.
