JOB TITLE: Lead Custodian

POSITION PURPOSE/SUMMARY
To provide effective team leadership in an effort to maintain a safe, clean, and attractive environment for staff and students to work and learn.
QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS
The Lead Custodian shall possess sufficient working knowledge of district custodial procedures, equipment maintenance/operations, and the ability to coordinate and prepare for upcoming events within the assigned building. Must possess the ability to effectively communicate in written and verbal formats. Must be able to work well under pressure and negotiate conflict situations as they arise.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES(Major duties which the position exists to perform)
- Perform all duties required of custodial employees with a modified work schedule to provide time for lead custodian responsibilities.
- Possess the ability to effectively communicate, verbally and in written form, with administrators, staff, and the community as needed.
- Confer with principal daily, when available, before beginning work for special instructions for the evening shift.
- Adjust and coordinate work schedules within the assigned building to accomplish the completion of all custodial tasks year-round.
- Confer with custodial supervisor/building principal to coordinate summer clean up.
- Inform the building principal/custodial supervisor of any concerns resulting from night activities in the building.
- Act as liaison between building administrators and custodial staff and between the day shift and evening shift.
- Inform the principal of any needed repairs or operational problems within the building.
- Order supplies in a timely fashion as directed by the custodial supervisor or Assistant Director of Custodial Services.
- Supervise the use of supplies; provide input as to the suitability and effectiveness of cleaning products.
- Routinely inspect equipment used by the custodial staff and report any mechanical problems to the custodial supervisor/building principal.
- Assist custodial supervisor in identifying additional equipment needs.
- Assign tasks and supervise the performance of substitute custodians and perform an inspection of their area if necessary, and send a copy of the report to the custodial supervisor. Immediately report any problems to the custodial supervisor/building principal.
- Immediately report any employee problems to the building principal.
- Attend and participate in any district required training.
ADDITIONAL DUTIES
- Maintain a neat, clean personal appearance and wear district uniforms at all times when performing custodial duties.
- Attend quarterly lead custodial meetings.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the principal and his/her designee.
- Maintain custodial tools and equipment.
- Perform emergency repairs or cleaning services as needed.
- Receive, sign for and store custodial, food service, and building supply deliveries.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the custodial foreman/building principal.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
The lead custodian must have the ability to lead a team of custodians to accomplish job goals, as well as help to train employees when inadequate performance is observed. The lead custodian will confer with the building administrator(s) and custodial supervisor on the job performance of building custodians.
MENTAL DEMANDS
Ability to maintain confidentiality; communicate clearly both orally and in writing, and/or ability to reason and make appropriate decisions. Must be able to work well under pressure and negotiate conflict situations as they arise.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
While performing these duties, the employee is regularly required to reach, climb, bend, stand, and walk. The employee continuously uses hand strength to grasp and use tools and climb ladders, as well as to use hands and fingers to handle or feel objects, tools, or controls and talk and hear.
The employee must normally lift up to 50 pounds and occasionally lift, move, push, or pull up to 100 pounds. The employees will frequently push or pull items such as desks, tables, bleachers, and scrubbing machines.
The employee should have good color vision, hearing, and speech capabilities.
ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS
The employee will occasionally work in conditions of extreme heat or cold.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT
Employment will be on an at-will basis for 12 months with two weeks vacation, beginning July 1, or from the time of employment for the duration of the school year with prorated vacation and/or personal leave. Each custodian will be provided a work calendar showing the specific daily work schedule of the employee. The work calendar may be modified by the Board of Education at any time, as needs dictate.
Eight hours will constitute a workday when working the night shift starting at 3 pm or later. Eight and one-half hours (including a 30 minute non-paid lunch period) will constitute a workday when working the day or split shift. The Assistant Superintendent of Personnel will establish a definite daily schedule.
The yearly salary will be disbursed in twenty-four (24) equal payments.
EVALUATION
End of the year performance evaluations will occur annually in accordance with the provisions of the Board's policy on evaluation of support staff personnel.
