Position Summary:
The Custodial Engineer is a vital frontline position with operational responsibilities that works across multiple program sites, including but not limited to critical safety, maintenance, and environmental oversight and supervision. The Custodial Engineer performs janitorial, environmental, and minor maintenance work in multiple facilities. This position is also responsible for supporting the Facilities Manager with procurement and management of supplies, including but not limited to documentation and reporting. The Custodial Engineer will ensure that proper procedures, and protocols, are used according to SELF’s general upkeep of property/assets, including buildings, vehicles, tools, and supplies inventory related to janitorial, environmental, and minor maintenance needs.
Shift: Typically 9 AM - 5 PM (Varies According to Organizational Needs).
Status: Full-Time - (Non-Exempt).
Reports To: Facilities Manager.
Direct Reports: No.
Key Duties and Responsibilities:
- Responsible for conducting daily rounds and comprehensive upkeep of the entire facility(s), including identifying areas to be cleaned and repaired and reporting findings to the Facilities Manager.
- Responsible for using proper methods and materials in cleaning and caring for buildings and equipment.
- Responsible for maintaining a safe physical environment which includes using floor signs when cleaning the floor, inspecting the fire extinguishers, smoke detectors, carbon monoxide detectors, exit signs, and ceiling lights to ensure they are working correctly, and promptly reporting findings to the Facilities Manager, and Program Director or Assistant Program Director.
- Responsible for cleaning inside the building and the outside parking lot.
- Responsible for following policy and procedure for rodent and insect invasion.
- Mop/scrub floors, wax/polish floor and furniture, dust furniture, clean/polish brass, clean lavatories and replace lavatory supplies, and dispose of all waste materials.
- Responsible for cutting grass, trimming hedges, shoveling snow, sweeping and cleaning walks, and keeping outside premises orderly.
- Responsible for the operation and care of vacuum cleaners, scrubbing machines, polishing machines, and other janitorial equipment, and making simple repairs to janitorial equipment.
- Responsible for maintaining inventory of all furniture, equipment, linen, supplies, etc., and submitting updates as required.
- Exercise care in the use of cleaning materials for different types of building surfaces.
- Responsible for attending scheduled and unscheduled staff and departmental meetings, supervision, and Community Meetings and training as directed.
- Performs related work as required.
Education and Qualifications:
- High School Diploma or GED equivalent plus two (2) years of training and/or experience in various janitorial, environmental, and minor maintenance services.
- Documented experience working in organizations with multiple facilities/properties.
- Must have a valid driver’s license and clean motor vehicle record.
- Must possess strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Professional efficiency with Microsoft Office Suite.
Knowledge, Skills, and Ability:
- Ability to understand and follow verbal and written instructions.
- Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds.
- Ability to squat, twist, bend, and kneel while using tools and performing maintenance tasks.
- Ability to climb ladders and work from heights.
- Knowledge of the methods, techniques, and materials used in custodial work.
- Knowledge of operating, caring for, and storing custodial equipment and supplies.
