About the Job
The Town of Ashland is currently seeking applicants for the position of per diem Crossing Guard. Crossing Guards work under the supervision of a full time Patrol Officer, a Sergeant, a Division Commander, the Officer in Charge, and/or the Chief of Police. Crossing Guards are primarily responsible to protect Ashland school children with crossing streets, roadways and public ways while going to and from school, and to provide for the orderly movement of traffic. Crossing Guards may also work police paid details when called upon by the Officer in Charge and/or the Chief of Police.
Essential Functions:
Crossing Guards in this classification performs highly responsible assistance to full time sworn police officers, in addition to all other duties and responsibilities associated with his/her position or assignment.
Report directly to assigned crossing stations, be on time, and remain there until the conclusion of the assignment.
Ensure that children use the proper crossing locations and that no children are in the street while traffic in moving.
Be alert for present or potential hazards in the area surrounding the assigned crossings. Submit to the Chief of Police a written report of any such hazards with a recommendation for remedial steps to be taken.
Care for lost children brought to the station when requested to do so by the Officer in Charge.
Communicate all significant information to the Officer in Charge of the shift and/or the Chief of Police.
Maintain confidentiality with regards to police relater matters and criminal investigations.
Provide translation of foreign language speaking parents and children for law enforcement personnel when fluent in the language.
Assist the police department in other community related police activities as needed.
Additional Duties and Responsibilities:
Responsible for the efficient performance of required duties in conformance with rules, regulations, policies and procedures contained within the Ashland Police Department’s Policies and Procedures and Rules and regulations Manual.
Assist with traffic control, and carry other duties when required to do so by the Chief of Police and/or his/her designee.
Assist with community policing related activities and events with the youth of Ashland.
Assist with other duties as required by the Chief of Police.
Peripheral Duties:
May be required to assist other town officials, or school officials with other police related duties as required by the Chief of Police.
Desired Minimum Qualifications:
Completed First Aid Medical Responder, CPR Training.
Ability to communicate with a wide range of people. Ability to maintain the knowledge, skills, and abilities required to perform the essential duties.
Working knowledge of the Massachusetts criminal, and traffic laws, as well as the Town of Ashland Ordinances, and by-laws.

Work Environment:
Work is performed predominantly in the field and occasionally in an office environment, assisting other Patrol Officers, School Resource Officers, Juvenile Officers, Detectives, Dispatchers, the Chief of Police, Civilian Support Staff, School Officials, Parents, Citizens, Community Leaders, and Business Leaders, often requiring on-site assistance, including emergencies and handling crime scenes.
Work may be performed under highly stressful conditions and/or with assigned deadlines. The work involves extended periods, occasional standing and/or walking, running over short and long distances, and occasional lifting. Incumbent must be able to manage time effectively.
The work requires the ability to listen and communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.
The incumbent must be able to communicate effectively over law enforcement radios channels.
Must be able to read and understand the English language at a level and speed adequate to perform the job.
Must be able to maintain confidentiality.
Must be able to analyze issues, facts and, evidence, solve cases and effectively using reason and logic.
Must be able to work within an incident command system, and crime scenes as directed.
Must be able to work flexible hours.
The work requires the ability to work effectively in a team environment.
Hourly Rate: $28.0888
