Overall Objectives of Position
The Creek Language Apprentice I will be a part of the Poarch Band of Creek Indians Language Program to help revitalize Creek Language by developing the fluency of speakers. Through language learning, the apprentice will engage in both a grammatical and immersion approach to language acquisition. The Apprentice I will show proficiency in verb conjugations (with a focus on imperative, present, and future tenses), creating simple sentences, and leading Pre-K classes before moving to Apprentice II. This job description is not an all-inclusive list of the duties and responsibilities of this position. The Creek Language Apprentice I is expected to perform all duties and responsibilities necessary to meet the goals and objectives of applicable programs.
The Creek Language Apprentice I is expected to live the Purpose and Values of the Poarch Band of Creek Indians and will go beyond the call of duty.
Primary Responsibilities of the Creek Language Apprentice I
- Trains with the Supervisor-Creek Language and Creek Language Instructor to be able to eventually serve the community in a Creek Language resource/teaching capacity.
- After a two-year training period, the Creek Language Apprentice I will undergo evaluation for promotion to Creek Language Apprentice II by the Supervisor-Creek Language.
- May request to test at any time during the training process (after 6 months) for promotion to Apprentice II.
- Participates in mentor-apprenticeship trainings by attending mentor-apprenticeship sessions when available.
- Commits to immersion style learning when attending mentor-apprenticeship trainings.
- Commits to encouraging a positive learning environment.
- Develops speaking ability by utilizing Creek language throughout the workday and other situations, practicing conversation, and addressing others in the Creek Language at cultural events and in the community.
- Develops writing abilities by creating transcripts from mentor-apprenticeship training sessions, assisting in language learning and instructional materials, keeping a journal to document increased literacy in Creek Language.
- Develops skills to lead Pre-K classes on an individual basis.
- Assists in developing study plans, participates in evaluations in determining areas of improvement and helps identifies resources to strengthen language skills.
- Assists in creating teaching materials and lessons for classes.
- Assists Supervisor-Creek Language in developing and creating an organized database/catalog of language material.
- Performs other duties as assigned by the appropriate person.
Day-to-day Responsibilities
- Learns Creek Language and trains to work towards conversational level speaking in the Creek Language.
- Assists Creek Language Instructor and/or Supervisor Creek Language in teaching Creek-Language classes.
- Teaches classes as needed or assigned by Creek Language Instructor and/or Supervisor-Creek Language.
Education/License/Certification and Experience Requirements
- High School Diploma or equivalent required or currently enrolled and successfully complete a GED program within six (6) months from start date as a condition of continued employment.
- Must possess certification of “Mandatory Reporter Training” or obtain during the first week of employment.
- Must possess and maintain First Aid/CPR certification or obtain within ninety (90) days of employment.
- Must possess certification of “ServSafe Training” or obtain within thirty (30) days of employment.
Skills Required
- Absolute confidentiality.
- Ability to handle challenging situations in a positive manner.
- Must have a working knowledge of computers with the ability to work in a Windows environment with various software programs such as Word and Excel.
- Skilled and mature in making valid judgements, demonstrated ability to establish workload priorities, and balance diverse projects.
- Able to work well independently and relate effectively with the public.
- Ability to work with all age groups including, but not limited to children (Fred L. McGhee Early Learning Center and B&G Club), Tribal Youth Council, Pow Wow Club, Princesses, and Elders.
- Must be people oriented and relate well to people from diverse backgrounds.
- Ability to provide all visiting guests/vendors with superior customer service and provide any assistance when needed.
- Knowledgeable in the Native American culture, especially Poarch Creek culture.
Additional Requirements
- Ability to work odd and irregular hours, including nights and weekends.
- Required to work all cultural events sponsored by the Cultural Department.
- Must successfully pass the required criminal and character check.
- Must possess a valid state driver’s license and insurable driving record according to Tribal Insurance guidelines.
- Ability to travel and participate in required training, leadership development, and other events.
- • Ability to adequately and successfully perform all duties and responsibilities of this position.
