The anticipated salary range for this role is between $73,000.00 and $86,000.00. The specific salary offered to an applicant will be based on their individual qualifications, experiences, and an analysis of the current compensation paid in their geography and the market for similar roles at the time of hire. The role may also be eligible for an annual discretionary incentive award. In addition to cash compensation, SMBC offers a competitive portfolio of benefits to its employees.
Role Description
SMBC is seeking a Credit Officer in the Credit Department with solid foundation in finance and strong ability to analyze elements of credit risk for subscription finance transactions with private equity funds. The Credit Officer is expected to support the Fund Finance risk team, including the review of credit applications submitted by the front office. This will include the preparation/presentation of executive summaries and recommendations to management of the Credit Department.
Role Objectives: Delivery
- Analyze credit risk of private equity fund clients, primarily related to subscription finance transactions.
- Scope of analysis and review includes, but not limited to, fund investor credit risk, deal structure, facility terms and conditions, transaction background, profitability, and relationship strategy.
- Coordinate the credit approval process by liaising between the front office and the management of the Credit Department.
- Provide feedback and guidance to front office to ensure consistent and complete credit applications and compliance with internal policies and procedures.
- Produce portfolio reporting utilizing advanced MS Excel and data automation tools.
- Create presentations which analyze trends and developments.
- Other credit related works/projects as assigned.

- Develop relationships with client-facing units to better understand the risks in their businesses, the instruments they handle and their counterparty relationships.
- Develop relationships with other units such as finance, compliance, legal and IT to improve workflows and data gathering / sharing.
- Begin to network within industry through meetings, events and involvement with trade organizations to better understand emerging risk trends.
Qualifications and Skills
- The ideal candidate will have a Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Economics, or a related field.
- 2 or more years of relevant work experience in the financial services industry preferred.
- Credit risk experience or formal credit training background a plus.
- Knowledge of fund finance, capital markets and derivatives preferred.
- Strong attention to detail, and excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Fundamental PC skills, including high proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel, are required.
- Ability and willingness to work as a team player, and under tight deadlines in a multi-tasking environment.
