About the Job
Position Purpose
The Cost Estimating Engineer participates in the cost estimation functions within the Basco-Schmidt Applications Engineering & Aftermarket Sales teams. This role emphasizes accuracy, efficiency, and continuous improvement of current processes and methodologies. The individual will collaborate with various departments to ensure accurate cost estimations and work closely with the Supply Chain group to facilitate the rapid and precise procurement of materials once an order is received.
Primary Responsibilities
· Standard Product Cost Estimates: Support the Applications and Aftermarket teams by assisting with preparation of material & labor product cost estimates. Identify areas for cost improvement. Ensure that estimates are accurate, competitive, and reflective of current market conditions.
· Cost Model Development: Analyze engineering designs, drawings, and specifications to develop comprehensive cost models using standardized parts.
· Costing Software Maintenance: Collaborate with Sourcing and Purchasing groups to maintain accurate and updated information in the costing software programs. Ensure that all data inputs are current and reflective of the latest pricing and market trends.
· Manufacturing Collaboration: Work closely with Manufacturing to keep Sales current on all labor standards as new tooling, equipment, and/or processes are implemented on the factory floor. Ensure that any changes in manufacturing processes are accurately reflected in cost estimations.
· Project Proposals: On larger contracts, analyze specifications and other documentation as necessary to prepare time, cost, and labor estimates for project proposals. Provide detailed and accurate cost breakdowns to support sales efforts and customer negotiations. Assess risks related to cost, materials, and project timelines to allow management to make informed decisions on market and profitability positions.
· Cost Variance Tracking: Track contract cost variances and help reconcile variances (favorable and unfavorable) between actual and estimated costs with appropriate Sales and Contract Administration personnel. Work with Accounting and Project Management to identify root causes of variances and implement corrective actions to improve future estimations.
Additional Responsibilities
· Inside Sales Assistance: Provide as-needed assistance with quoting and sales of price book and/or aftermarket products.
· Additional Tasks: Undertake special projects and other tasks as directed by the supervisor.
Qualifications
· Education:
o Degree in Engineering Technology, Supply Chain Management, Business Administration, or a related field. Equivalent experience acceptable. Relevant certifications (e.g., AACE International Certified Cost Estimator) are a plus.
· Experience:
o Minimum of 5 years of experience in cost estimating, or a similar role within a manufacturing environment. Experience with cost estimation software and ERP systems is highly desirable.
o Experience in Shell & Tube Heat Exchangers and/or Pressure Vessels is highly desirable.
o Understanding of ASME Code materials identification.
· Skills:
o Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with a keen attention to detail.
o Ability to read and interpret technical drawings, BOM’s, and specifications.
o Excellent negotiation and communication skills.
o Ability to work collaboratively with cross-functional teams.
o Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, PowerPoint).
o Familiarity with manufacturing processes and cost drivers.

Work Environment
The work environment for the Cost Estimating Engineer & Purchasing Agent is primarily based in an office setting within a manufacturing facility. The role may require occasional visits to the production floor and supplier sites. The position involves regular interaction with various departments, including Sales, Engineering, Manufacturing, Sourcing, and Project Management. Currently offering hybrid work schedule at one (1) day per week remote work.
Physical Demands
The physical demands of this position include sitting for extended periods, working on a computer, and occasionally lifting materials or equipment weighing up to 25 pounds. The role may require occasional travel to meet with suppliers or attend industry conferences.
Reporting Structure
This position reports to the Applications Engineering Manager, with dotted line accountability to the Aftermarket Manager, and Purchasing Manager.
Compensation and Benefits
· Salary: $70,000 min - $ 85,000 max, depending on experience
