Since 1917, Globe Machine has been a manufacturer of industrial machines, systems, and plants for advanced composites, building products, and pulp & paper.
Reporting to the President, this is an integral member of Globe's management team. The successful candidate will provide ongoing leadership for a team of individual contributors responsible for designing and developing engineering solutions and coordinating projects. In addition to overseeing the department, this individual will manage deliverables, schedules, and costs for multiple ongoing projects ensuring resources are appropriately allocated and goals, objectives, timelines, and budgets are met in accordance with department and organizational roadmaps.
Position will be located in Tacoma.
Management
- Assign and manage the workload of the controls department personnel including engineers and drafters.
- Recruit employees, assign, direct and evaluate their work and oversee the development and maintenance of staff competence.
- Analyze technology, resource needs and market demand to plan and organize departmental resources.
- Assign project personnel to specific phases or aspects of projects including technical studies, product design, preparation of specifications and technical plans and product testing in accordance with engineering disciplines and staff.
Technical Management
- Create, maintain, and monitor controls design and programming standards.
- Confer with Controls Team, System Engineer, and management to review design specifications of equipment.
- Confirm project or equipment specifications and performance requirements to plan control design assignments for release to engineering project team.
- Plan and direct preparation of layout and detailed drawings and schematics.
- Coordinate activities concerned with technical developments, scheduling and resolving engineering design and test problems.
- Direct integration of controls engineering technical activities and equipment.
- In conjunction with the Engineering Manager, evaluate and approve design changes, specifications, and drawing releases.
- Observe tests of equipment under operational conditions to investigate design proposals for improvement of equipment performance, or to obtain data for further development, standardization, and quality control.
Manufacturing Support
- Provide or coordinate manufacturing support of equipment, in-house pre-commissioning, in-house testing, and in-house Factory Acceptance Tests.
- Provide hands-on instruction to shop personnel regarding specifications of Electrical Systems equipment.
Design
- Analyze engineering sketches, specifications, drawings and related data to determine electrical, hydraulic, pneumatic, motion and control components for mechanical equipment.
- Prepare initial process descriptions and sequence of operation documentation.
Customer Support
- Serve as primary Controls Engineering contact responsible for troubleshooting challenges with installed existing equipment, maintenance questions, and upgrades.
Sales Support
- Maintain and provide technical documentation for sales department.
- Review customer Request for Proposals, Mill Standards, and Controls Specifications and provide Sales reports on deviations to Globe Standards, estimated cost impact, and recommended response.
- Provide preliminary hardware design and/or past references for cost estimating and proposals.
- Estimate controls engineering and electrical shop labor for cost estimating and scheduling.
- Review Globe proposals and cost estimates, and provide Sales reports on corrections, changes, and improvements to scope, design, descriptions, and costs.
- Other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- BSEE in electro-mechanical design engineering required.
- Minimum of five years progressive experience in the Controls Engineering field.
- Minimum of five years progressive staff management experience leading diverse engineering teams at the project management level.
- Proven experience in industrial electrical design, PLC programming, HMI software design, industrial networking, MCC hardware/software configuration, and Closed-Loop Servo control required.
- Minimum seven years' experience in a manufacturing environment desired.
- Working knowledge of AutoCAD 2012 and Microsoft Office required.
- Demonstrated knowledge of mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, pneumatic, motion and control components required.
- Ability to read engineering drawings, hydraulic and pneumatic diagrams and electrical schematics required.
- Demonstrated knowledge of panel handling, wood products equipment, and/or plastic composites manufacturing equipment and automation desired.
- Strong organizational and time management skills with demonstrated ability to deliver high quality projects on time and within budget required.
- Proven track record of being self-motivated, working with minimal supervision, and leading and partnering with diverse team members required.
- Ability to handle multiple priorities efficiently, retain a sense of urgency and meet strict timelines required.
- Conduct oneself with the highest level of professionalism and ethical standards.
