The Ranger Group, a leading US Engineering Solutions provider to companies across the Aerospace & Defense, Medical Device, Electronics and Industrial Manufacturing industries, is currently seeking a Controls Engineer for a Direct Hire role with a client of ours in Tempe, AZ.
Job Summary:
Responsible for designing, developing, implementing, and maintaining control systems for industrial machinery and processes. They collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure efficient and reliable operation of manufacturing processes, while also optimizing productivity and minimizing downtime.
Key Responsibilities:
• Control System Design: Design control systems for industrial machinery and processes, considering factors such as safety, reliability, and efficiency. Utilize knowledge of electrical engineering principles, instrumentation, and automation technologies to develop innovative solutions.
• Programming and Configuration: Write, test, and debug PLC (Programmable Logic Controller) code, HMI (Human-Machine Interface) applications, and SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition) systems. Configure communication protocols and network interfaces for seamless integration of control devices. Configure Circuit Breakers for use within UL891 Switchboards.
• System Integration: Integrate control systems with existing equipment and infrastructure, ensuring compatibility and interoperability. Collaborate with mechanical engineers, electrical engineers, and other stakeholders to implement comprehensive solutions.
• Testing and Validation: Conduct thorough testing of control systems to verify functionality, performance, and compliance with specifications. Develop and execute test plans, analyze test results, and make necessary adjustments to optimize system performance.
• Troubleshooting and Maintenance: Identify and resolve issues related to control systems, including hardware failures, software bugs, and communication errors. Perform routine maintenance tasks to ensure continuous operation and prevent unexpected downtime.
• Documentation and Reporting: Maintain comprehensive documentation of control system designs, configurations, and modifications. Generate reports to communicate project status, performance metrics, and recommendations for improvement.
• Compliance and Safety: Adhere to relevant industry standards, codes, and regulations governing industrial control systems (UL891, 508a, 67 & 1773). Implement safety protocols and measures to protect personnel, equipment, and the environment.
• Continuous Improvement: Stay updated on emerging technologies, trends, and best practices in industrial automation and controls engineering. Identify opportunities for process improvement and propose innovative solutions to enhance efficiency and productivity.
Qualifications and Skills:
• Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Automation Engineering, or related field.
• Proven experience in industrial controls engineering, preferably in a manufacturing or process industry.
• Proficiency in PLC programming languages (e.g., ladder logic, function block diagram), HMI development tools, and SCADA software.
• Strong understanding of electrical circuits, instrumentation, and control systems theory.
• Familiarity with industrial communication protocols (e.g., Modbus, Profibus, Ethernet/IP).
• Excellent problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
• Effective communication skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams.
• Ability to work independently, manage multiple tasks simultaneously, and meet project deadlines.
• Knowledge of safety standards and regulations related to industrial automation (e.g., NFPA 70E).
Preferred Qualifications:
• Master's degree in Electrical Engineering, Automation Engineering, or related field.
• Professional certification in industrial automation or controls engineering.
• Experience with PLC/HMI/SCADA platforms such as Allen-Bradley, Siemens, Schneider Electric, or others.
• UL508A/UL891 Manufacturer’s Technical Representative Certifications.
• Experience with industrial networking technologies (e.g., Ethernet, DeviceNet, ControlNet).
