EAD Engineering is looking for an experienced Controls Engineer that will act as the internal controls subject matter expert for simple to complex projects for EAD's key customer in the food, pharmaceutical, and parcel sectors. Must be able to understand and articulate electrical and controls philosophies that are mainly focused but not limited to various PLC's and subsystems. This individual shall be able to work both independently and on a team environment. Aids in the design and development of systems/subsystems to fulfill contract requirements. Interact with Electrical, Mechanical, Project Management, Purchasing, Field on the design, procurement, and installation of the systems being designed
Responsibilities
- Play a role in scope definition and design with primary responsibilities of PLC/DCS based control system and instrument design per client requirements
- Perform all programming of the control system, as required
- Interface with clients, vendors, construction administrators, and project team
- Perform and document technical design reviews with other disciplines on the project team to produce the highest level of quality
- Capable and experienced in managing and performing projects in a fast-paced environment
- Time manage and prioritize tasks to achieve results within cost and schedule constraints
- Responsible for adhering to all EAD's safety standards and practices
- Perform other related duties as assigned
- Learn customer-specific electrical & controls specifications and industry standard practices. Become the key contact in the organization for all parcel electrical and controls knowledge.
- Review complex project requirements and mechanical conveyor layouts outlining specific control functions for designing the control system architecture.
- Able to review all electrical documentation (Device layouts, one-line diagrams, schematics, PLC layout, Electrical sub-assemblies, Ethernet and DeviceNet cabling, using AutoCAD or designated medium and provide recommendation as need for designability and procurement.
- Selection and procurement of all electrical components, creation of project electrical BOM's, purchase requisitions.
- Interface with panel fabricator for the design and implementation of control cabinets and consoles.
- Create scope of work for electrical contractors.
- Preparation of electrical sections for project maintenance manuals which include final BOM's, recommended spare parts list and drawings lists.
- Adherence to project budgets, both material costs and engineering hours.
- Prepare and present cost analysis for determining the best course of action.
- Stay abreast of new technologies and evaluate new electrical components for improved functionality and cost effectiveness.
- Maintains and updates current procedures and tools to facilitate engineering.
- Reviews control panels, utilizing standard off-the-shelf devices such as circuit breakers, fuses, contactors, VFD's, PLC's, which will control AC/DC conveyor systems and field devices.
- Fill out electrical material requisitions and work with purchasing to procure all electrical devices per project requirements and schedules.
- Provides engineering support for field start up personnel.
- Oversee and/or generate cost estimates for proposed opportunities.
- Creates all electrical and controls documentation needed for the Sales process and Proposal or Rough Order of Magnitude (ROM) Letter for the opportunity.
- Attend and contribute technical support to pre-and-post sales customer consultations and sales presentations.
- Able to outline specific control functions for designing the control system architecture.
- Develop Request for Proposal packages for submittal to prospective equipment and service suppliers. Assist in review of their RFP responses.
- Reviews received proposals for accuracy in terms of material costs and engineering hours.
Requirements:
- Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering with a minor in computer engineering/science or related field preferred; and/or four years of service with the military, or equivalent combination of education, training, and experience
- Minimum of 0 to 2 years of experience with automation, electrical controls, PLC/DCS based control systems (maintenance and troubleshooting), AC/DC drives, power distribution, simulation, using 480/120Vac and 24VDC electrical systems/subsystems and instrumentation. Experience with any of the following PLC platforms preferred: Allen-Bradley, Siemens, Emerson
- Demonstrate a high degree of self-motivation and performs in a highly independent manner, with minimal supervision
- Demonstrate strong analytical and organizational abilities in order to make effective decisions in an expedient manner while maintaining high quality of standards
- Knowledge in HMI or SCADA programming and configuration. Experience in any of the following software packages is preferred: Wonderware, FactoryTalk, Ignition
- Possess and able to maintain a valid driver's license.
- Working knowledge of A.C. and D.C. electrical theory.
- Knowledge of AutoCAD as it pertains to electrical and control schematics.
- Working knowledge of NEC (National Electric Code) (2017), NFPA 79 (2018) and UL508A
- Proficient in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel and Outlook)
- Strong time management skills.
- Strong and effective communication, writing, and computer skills are essential.
- Ability to understand operational flow and in incorporate these requirements into system design including software design.
- Ability to write a high-level functional design description considering all aspects of the solution including operations, software, and equipment.
- Ability to identify roadblocks and either clear them or escalate to upper management.
- Ability to work in a team environment and collaborate with others subject matter experts to deliver the most optimized solution.
Working Conditions:

- Ability to sit and work at computer for extended periods of time
- Ability to walk up numerous flights of stairs/ladders multiple times a day and/or work in tight spaces in extreme conditions
- May work near moving mechanical parts and equipment*
- Office, Commercial and/or Industrial setting with the potential of exposure to fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals*
- Ability to lift and/or move up to 50 lbs.*
- Periodic weekend, holiday or evening work, as needed
- Travel required, as needed.
*EAD will provide training, administrative/engineering controls, and personal protective equipment, as necessary.
