ROLE WITH THE COMPANY:
The Controller is the senior financial leader of the company and will oversee all financial accounting functions including monthly close cycle, financial reporting, financial analysis, budgeting, and assure adherence to internal controls and financial regulations specific to the insurance industry. This is a hands-on Controller role and currently a department of one that requires ownership of all accounting in the company and provides financial support to the owners. Strong organizational skills with ability to prioritize and willingness to get in the details to as well as provide strategic financial advice. Reports to the VP-Operations with dotted line reporting to another VP and President.
- Responsible for all general accounting functions, including Accounts Payable, Accounts Receivable, general ledger maintenance, journal entries, account reconciliations, tracking expenses, creating budgets, managing cash flow and taxes
- Ensure timely processing of payroll.
- Prepare monthly financial statements with variance analysis and review with leadership.
- Lead annual budget development process.
- Review the general ledger and complete supporting reconciliations and journal entries.
- Oversee cash management activities and forecast cash requirements.
- Ensure banks receive appropriate reporting each month and prepare for quarterly bank reviews & bank relationships.
- Work with external auditors to manage the annual audit.
- Work with CPA firm on tax strategy and provide financial information needed for business and personal tax returns.
- Coordinate proper insurance coverage (Workers Comp, GL and Health).
- Facilitate accounting process improvements.
- Identify, analyze, and resolve accounting and operational matters with vendors, customers, and banks.
- Develop, implement, improve, and review internal controls, accounting policies and procedures
- Insurance Financial Reporting: Responsible for preparing and analyzing financial reports specific to the insurance industry. This includes generating premium income reports, claims analysis, and policyholder surplus statements.
- Premium and Claims Accounting: Handle the accounting processes related to insurance premiums and claims. This involves recording premium payments, reconciling accounts receivable, and processing claims payments accurately and in compliance with regulatory requirements.
- Reserves and Loss Analysis: Assist in calculating insurance reserves and analyzing loss data. This helps in assessing the financial impact of claims and determining appropriate reserve levels.
- Reinsurance Accounting: Involved in reinsurance accounting, which includes reconciling reinsurance contracts, tracking premiums and claims related to reinsurance, and ensuring accurate accounting treatment of reinsurance transactions.
- Regulatory Compliance: Ensure compliance with insurance regulations and accounting standards. This involves staying updated on relevant regulations, preparing financial reports required by regulatory bodies, and assisting with audits.
- Financial Systems and Software: Utilize insurance-specific accounting software and financial systems to manage policy information, premiums, claims, and financial transactions.
- Collaboration and Communication: Collaborate with underwriters, claims professionals, and other stakeholders to gather and analyze financial data, provide insights, and support decision-making.
- Bachelor’s degree in accounting or finance
- 10+ years’ accounting experience including 5+ years at Controller level including managerial/supervisory experience
- Experience in the P&C insurance industry, specifically with a broker or MGA company
- Knowledge of statutory accounting - huge plus
- Family office experience doing personal taxes, tax planning, good at finding business tax deductions for personal tax
- Hands-on full cycle month end close accounting experience including AR, AP, Payroll, GL, financial statements
- Experience creating internal reports and tracking internal company metrics
- Experience managing annual external audit and working with CPA firm on business/personal taxes and tax strategy
- Experience strategizing with leadership and providing long term solutions as company grows
- Bilingual (Spanish) - huge plus, or if not bilingual, comfortable in bilingual environment
- Strong Excel skills and experience with QuickBooks and other accounting software systems
- Go-getter with the ability to prioritize and manage several tasks at once
- Ability to communicate effectively across functions
