Location: North County, San Diego – Hybrid
Title: Controller
Salary: $175-250k(DOE) + Bonus + Equity
Job Description: The ideal candidate will have a proven track record in financial management within both a public company and preferably also a private company that is preparing for or undergoing an IPO. This role requires a strategic thinker with a solid background in public company reporting compliance and the ability to handle the complexities of international financial operations.
Responsibilities:
- Financial Reporting and Compliance:
- Prepare and oversee the timely and accurate preparation of financial statements, including the balance sheet, income statement, and cash flow statement, in accordance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).
- Ensure compliance with regulatory requirements and reporting obligations, including SEC regulations for pre-IPO companies.
- Coordinate and manage the annual external audit process and liaise with auditors.
- Accounting Operations:
- Oversee day-to-day accounting operations, including general ledger maintenance, accounts payable and receivable, payroll, and expense management.
- Establish and maintain accounting policies and procedures to ensure accuracy, consistency, and compliance with internal controls.
- Monitor and reconcile bank accounts, intercompany transactions, and other financial accounts.
- Manage the monthly, quarterly, and annual closing process, including the review and analysis of financial data.
- Internal Controls and Risk Management:
- Establish and maintain effective internal controls to safeguard company assets and ensure the accuracy and integrity of financial records.
- Assess and mitigate financial risks, including fraud risks, and implement appropriate controls and processes.
- Stay updated with changes in accounting regulations and industry best practices and ensure compliance.
- IPO Readiness and Compliance:
- Support the company's IPO preparation efforts, including the coordination of financial due diligence, SEC filings, and investor relations.
- Collaborate with legal, finance, and other departments to ensure compliance with IPO-related requirements and timelines.
- Assist in the preparation of financial sections of the IPO prospectus and investor presentations.
- Team Management:
- Supervise and mentor a team of accounting professionals, providing guidance, training, and feedback.
- Foster a culture of collaboration, continuous improvement, and high performance within the finance and accounting team.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field. A Master's degree or CPA (Certified Public Accountant) qualification is highly desirable.
- Knowledge of accounting principles and practices, including GAAP (Generally Accepted Accounting Principles) and nonprofit accounting standards if applicable.
- Significant experience (typically 7-10 years) in accounting and finance roles, preferably in the healthcare or biotech industry.
- Experience in a managerial or supervisory capacity, overseeing accounting operations and leading a team.
- Ability to think strategically and contribute to the company's overall financial planning and decision-making processes.
- Strong analytical skills to evaluate financial performance, identify trends, and provide insights to support the company's mission and goals.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills to effectively communicate financial information to stakeholders at various levels.
- Strong leadership and interpersonal skills to manage a team, collaborate with cross-functional teams, and build relationships with external partners.
- Attention to Detail and Accuracy
- Ability to work in a fast-paced and dynamic environment, adapting to changing priorities and requirements.
- High ethical standards and integrity in handling financial information and maintaining confidentiality

Determining compensation for this role (and others) at Vaco depends upon a wide array of factors including but not limited to:
- the individual’s skill sets, experience and training;
- licensure and certification requirements;
- office location and other geographic considerations;

With that said, as required by local law, Vaco believes that the following salary range referenced above reasonably estimates the base compensation for an individual hired into this position in geographies that require salary range disclosure. The individual may also be eligible for discretionary bonuses.
