PURPOSE: The Controller is responsible for overseeing the accounting practices of the organization, as well as managing and maintaining its fiscal records. The individual will sustain overall responsibility for enforcing vigorous internal controls and guaranteeing the prompt submission of financial reports. This role entails the oversight of day-to-day accounting staff management and works closely with the Associate Executive Director of Business and Finance, team leaders, management team, and external auditors. In addition, the Controller possesses comprehensive knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles, GAAP.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Include the following; however, other duties may be assigned.
- Ensures compliance with GAAP and applicable federal, state, and local regulatory laws and rules for financial and tax reporting.
- Prepares network-wide financial statements on a monthly basis, including the statement of activities, and the statement of financial position.
- Supports the Associate Executive Director of Business and Finance in presenting reports that compare the budgeted figures with the actual results; assists in interpreting and explaining any discrepancies between the budgeted and actual figures.
- Communicates effectively and keeps the organization's Associate Executive Director of Business and Finance apprised of pertinent accounting information.
- Oversees the accurate tracking and reporting of all programs, and projects, and leads the timely and accurate tracking and reporting of all revenue.
- Updates and modifies accounting policies and procedures.
- Reviews and updates internal control policies ensuring the segregation of duties and safeguarding of the organization's assets.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:
- Bachelor's Degree in Accounting is required; CPA and Master's degree are preferred.
- Five years or more of related experience in accounting, finance, or a similar role with exceptional technical skills required.
- Expertise in all aspects of accounting including account reconciliation, budgeting, presentation of information, analysis, projections, internal controls, and nonprofit or government accounting experience preferred.
- Expertise in finance for a complex organization or similar environment, including a background of working with or for external auditors preferred.
SUPERVISORY EXPERIENCE:
- Supervises an accounting staff of 10 or more on all daily operations of accounting and payroll teams.
- Conducts performance reviews for the employees in the accounting department and develops corrective action plans when needed.
DESIRED QUALIFICATION:
- Chief Financial Officer experience is preferred.
- Master's degree preferred.
- CPA or CMA preferred.
