We are seeking an experienced and highly motivated Controller to join our dynamic team at our client, a leading general contractor providing construction services across various industries, including commercial, residential, industrial, and infrastructure projects. As a Controller, you will play a critical role in overseeing the financial operations of our organization, ensuring compliance, optimizing financial performance, and providing strategic financial insights to support business growth.
Key Responsibilities:
Financial Management & Reporting:
Prepare and oversee the company’s financial statements, ensuring accuracy, consistency, and compliance with relevant accounting standards (GAAP, IFRS).
Manage month-end, quarter-end, and year-end closing processes, ensuring timely and accurate reporting.
Analyze financial performance and provide actionable insights to management, identifying areas for cost savings and operational improvements.
Budgeting & Forecasting:
Lead the preparation of annual budgets, financial forecasts, and variance analysis.
Collaborate with project managers and department heads to develop project-specific budgets and monitor progress throughout the life cycle of each project.
Ensure that projects are completed on budget and identify potential financial risks in advance.
Cash Flow & Treasury Management:
Oversee cash flow management to ensure adequate liquidity for daily operations and project funding.
Manage accounts payable, accounts receivable, and maintain positive relationships with vendors and clients to ensure timely payments and collections.
Optimize working capital by effectively managing invoicing, collections, and payments.
Internal Controls & Compliance:
Develop and maintain robust internal controls to safeguard company assets and ensure compliance with financial policies and procedures.
Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local tax regulations, as well as industry-specific laws and financial reporting requirements.
Coordinate with external auditors for annual audits and implement audit recommendations as necessary.
Cost Control & Project Financials:
Monitor and track project costs, ensuring that project budgets are adhered to, and variances are properly managed.
Work closely with the project management team to ensure proper allocation of project costs, tracking of change orders, and completion within the set financial parameters.
Analyze financial data to identify trends in project costs and provide recommendations to improve profitability.
Team Leadership & Development:
Supervise and mentor a team of finance professionals, providing leadership and fostering a culture of accountability and continuous improvement.
Assist in the recruitment, training, and development of finance staff to ensure high performance within the department.
Maintain strong communication across departments, ensuring financial goals align with operational objectives.
Strategic Financial Planning:
Collaborate with senior leadership to develop long-term financial strategies and company growth objectives.
Provide insights into financial performance that drive decision-making and contribute to the strategic direction of the company.
Identify opportunities for process improvement, automation, and operational efficiencies within the finance function.
Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field (CPA, CMA, or equivalent certification preferred).
Minimum of 5-7 years of experience in a financial leadership role, with at least 3-5 years in the construction or general contracting industry.
In-depth knowledge of construction industry accounting practices, cost accounting, job costing, and financial reporting.
Strong understanding of financial software, ERP systems (such as Procore, Viewpoint, or Sage 300), and Microsoft Excel.
Exceptional analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively across various departments.
Strong leadership and team management capabilities.
Detail-oriented with a focus on maintaining accuracy in a fast-paced environment.
Preferred:
Experience working with multiple industries (e.g., residential, commercial, industrial, infrastructure).
Knowledge of construction contract terms and conditions, including subcontractor agreements and lien waivers.
Experience with project financing and working with banks or other financial institutions to secure project funding.
