About the Job
Masuda Funai is seeking a Controller to manage the firm’s accounting and finance functions, including leading the monthly close, budget and forecast processes; establishing financial policies, procedures, and controls; ensuring legal and regulatory compliance; and overseeing accounts payable, accounts receivable, billing and collections.
Responsibilities:
1. Manage the financial reporting functions of the firm.
- Monthly close process
- Develop annual budget and prepare variance analyses to budget
- Accurate and timely dissemination of financial management reports to the Principals
- Monthly revenue analysis
- Cash management, including banking, accounts payable and accounts receivable
- Provide data and analysis to support the Principal Compensation Plan
- Periodic management/operations reporting
- Guide financial decisions by establishing, monitoring, and enforcing policies and procedures
- Profitability analysis
2. Lead external reporting requirements.
- Manage external Profit Sharing 401(k) Retirement Plan audit/form 5500
- Develop external financial statements
3. Manage taxes and other compliance reporting.
- Tax reporting and planning
- Maintain depreciation and amortization schedules and recordings
- Work with external tax advisors to ensure that all state and federal filing are prepared on a timely basis,
- Prepare federal and state tax workpapers including taxable income calculations for quarterly estimated tax payments
- Local tax reporting and payments
4. Manage the accounting functions of the firm.
- Billing and collections
- Expense reports and vendor and supplier payments
- Payroll processing and recording to GL
- Account reconciliations
- Protects assets by establishing, monitoring and enforcing internal controls
- Identify efficiencies within the accounting process
5. Supervise and develop accounting staff.
- Supervise Accounting Manager and oversight of accounting staff
- Mentor and develop staff; ensure cross-training throughout the department
- Foster a collaborative atmosphere
Qualifications:
- Exemplary Excel skills, proficiency in Word and PowerPoint, and extensive experience with accounting/billing software.
- Must have strong analytic skills and the ability to think strategically
- Must be able to work under pressure, meet deadlines, and be flexible in working on multiple projects simultaneously
- Strong organization and time management skills
- Excellent communication skills, including the ability to present financial data/recommendations effectively
- Must show leadership skills and move others to action
- Must demonstrate a positive, results-oriented style of planning, controlling and organizing the work to be done
- Professional, diplomatic, and resilient demeanor and the ability to effectively interact and communicate with attorneys, clients, and staff
- Bachelors Degree in Accounting or Finance
- Minimum of 7 years of progressive experience managing the accounting function in a mid-sized law firm or professional services organization.
- Minimum 7 years supervisory experience
- Ability to work in the Chicago office 3 days a week
Preferred Qualifications:
- Licensed CPA
- Experience with Elite 3E
