POSITION OVERVIEW:
The Controller will lead all day-to-day accounting operations of a budget of approximately $26 million. The Controller will provide year-round performance management, coaching, direction, and supervision to a team of three employees. The Controller will provide sound financial expertise in the areas of internal and external financial reporting, financial planning, budgeting, and financial analysis, in addition to counsel relative to all financial activities. They will also maintain the journals and general ledgers of JVS. Finally, the Controller will serve as a company representative for operational issues with banking, investment, and other financial institutions.
CORE COMPETENCIES:
Supervision and Collaboration:
- The Controller is responsible for the management and supervision of three staff members including functional responsibility over accounting, accounts payable, accounts receivable, and payroll reconciliation and recording.
- Responsible for year-end evaluation of staff and employee professional development plans.
- Responsible for hiring and onboarding new direct reports and other team members as needed.
- Provide training to stakeholders on financial process, information, and updates.
Banking and Treasury:
- Serve as a contact for both investment and banking relationships
- Manage daily funding and disbursement, forecasting net cash position, analysis of bank activity, and assessment of investing/borrowing activity
Internal Controls:
Maintain internal control and safeguards for the agency involving:
- Receipt of revenue
- Recording of costs
- Program budgets and actual expenditures
- Grant expenditures
- Select, design, and oversee software installations and manage relationships with software vendors
- Counsel and compliance relative to JVS Boston’s financial standards and policies
- Manage the agency credit card program and corporate purchasing accounts
Internal and External Reporting:
- Design, manage, and maintain the agency financial fund accounting system and integrate with other financial applications and agency databases
- Develop, implement, and maintain a system for reporting pertinent quantitative operating information to management.
- Produce financial packages for the Board and Budget & Finance Committee, and funders as appropriate
- Prepare executive summaries and operating reporting for budget vs. actual results and interpretive follow-up with org-wide responsible staff
- Produce reports and schedules as required in oversight of annual Audited Financial package and associated filings, in coordination with contract CPA firm
- Project cash flow
Planning/Organizing:
- Develop, automate, and document systems, policies, procedures, and internal controls, to ensure compliance with accounting standards and improve efficiencies
- Integration of budgeting and forecasting into accounting and control systems and related reporting as appropriate
- The Controller will partner with senior leadership, People & Culture (P&C), organizational operations, and information technology (IT) staff to enhance and better integrate finance, P&C, operations, and IT functions
Analysis:
- Functional spending and operating costs relative to industry-specific ratios and metrics
- Project analytical support, analysis, and presentations
- Support the CFO in engaging the Board’s Budget & Finance and other committees around issues and trends in financial operations.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or related field; CPA/MBA a plus. Exceptional accounting skills;
- Minimum of 7 years of progressive accounting experience in a nonprofit organization, and with specific experience with nonprofit revenue recognition, statement production and compliance;
- Minimum of 2 years of direct staff supervisory experience;
- Proficiency with nonprofit fund accounting systems
- Strong working knowledge of Microsoft Office (Intermediate/Advanced Excel is a requirement);
- Confident self-starter; ability to prioritize, juggle multiple deadlines and projects;
- Ability to troubleshoot, design, implement, and manage systems that contribute to an efficient working environment;
- Meticulous attention to detail with excellent analytical, problem-solving, verbal and written communication skills;
- Ability to work effectively with Board of Directors, senior staff, volunteers, and peers;
- Creative, results oriented, and energetic with the ability to work independently and in a team environment.
